Whooping Crane (Grus americana)
Very cool pic Melody!
It was one of the most emotional mornings of my life. I've spent several years following the Operation Migration, and this year, the route change had them with a stop over in my county, about 8 miles down the road. We gathered at the break of dawn, 19 degrees, and much earlier than I'm accustomed to rising. The ultralights came over the viewing area from where they had been stored, and went to the secluded area to pick up the cranes. There wasn't a dry eye as they came back with those cranes following off of their wing. There were 3 ultralights, one lead 'bird' and two following at a distance to pick up stragglers if they strayed. I do hope that this route was a good one for them, as I'd love to see them again.
Wow that would be an emotional experience especially since you've followed it for so long.
I hope they do choose that route again.
