Downy Woodpecker (Picoides p. pubescens)
For the last 2 days I have seen this woodpecker in my yard, for the first time ever, and I have lots of birds and lots of birdfeeders. I looked it up on the internet and found out adult males have the red on the back of their head and the juvenile males have red on the top of their head, which is like the one I've been seeing.
I noticed no one else from Oregon had added our State yet, so now we are on the list. I will try to get a picture to add if possible.
Hi dragon, Actually both male and female juvenile Downy Woodpeckers get the red on the top of the head until they mature and you can then tell the sex.
Nice pic Eric!
We have several of these that I noticed this winter when I put out some suet. How big do they get because we have one that is really large.
