Help with getting rid of IE

I just bought a new Dell computer, and with Dave's suggestion, I downloaded firefox. But it still have IE on here, and last night it did the automatic update thing. Well, when I tried to get online this morning, it told me there was no internet connection. I have connection to my laptop, but not the new computer. SO I did the restore, and got rid of the update. But I want IE off my computer, or at least tell me how to stop the updates?
