Beans stay hard

springfield area, MO(Zone 5b)

I'm trying to make chili.
I soaked some red beans over night. Drained and rinsed and then put everything together in a large pot. Simmered for like 3 hours now and they are still too firm. Did I do something wrong?
I just am a dud at making chili. :(
