Shirley poppies in my garden. I love them. They are easy to grow though they do have their faults.

Its my first sow with Shirleys,What are the drawbacks?
Their major drawback is that they don't last the whole season. Mine are done by mid to late June.
I would love to see some hybridizers develop a strain that is short for the front of the border. Shirleys in my garden tend to be about 2 fewet tall.
Thanks I dont know what I was expecting but a short season wont put me around the bend.
I couldn't imagine what could be bad about something so pretty.
i'm curious...did any of your shirley's self seed and come up in 2009? i'm asking, because none of mine did..and some of them were so interesting.

I direct sowed in 2008.I sowed in 2 places only one place had poppies.
This was my first Shirly poppy season.

I had very few volunteer this past year....but I have a number of seedlings coming up now. I have transplanted them into a number of other places in the garden, so all they have to do is make it through the winter for 2010. I think that maybe the rabbits that are always outwitting my attempts to keep them out of my garden may find them tasty fare in mid winter when all else is brown.
Your milder climate keeps them alive in winter.
Our freezes kill everything
Could be on the freezes. I am either 6a or 6b.
I'm 6a too, but annual poppies dont live here thru the winter.
Could you have been referring to Orientals Perennial poppies?
no these are definitely shirleys.

I find p.somnifariums are more prolific and reliable self seeders.
I have big dreams for the first year harvest and re sowing here.
If I like where everything comes up I will just let them continue to populate the garden.
I hope to see some of these Flemish Antiques.
The only drawback to poppies is they get leggy and flop everywhere

Can't they be staked?
I staked this bunch altho they loose the free open wavy attitude when bunched in the middle.
Ibelieve and hope that when they are better established in among the JI's and Lilies ,they will not flop over.Lilies should hold them up pretty good.
Also, I dont thin mine. I just cant bear to pull them out.
Last spring was the firdt year I had any.
I direct sowed Somniferiums in 3 places 2 places did well.
Venus in the west garden
and Flemish Antique in the DayLily garden.
These are small clumps the first year 100 seeds doesnt make much of a statement.
I wasnt happy with Flems Antiq so I yanked most before they could re seed.
I yanked Venus because I wanted the seeds to mature in a bag in the garage so I could relocate them.
This is a aspect of Picasa I dont like. When the file menu drops down ALL the files chosen foe collage show.
I have to fish around to find the file for the collage amonst all the images in the collage.

I do understand the staking making the poppies look too rigid and not natural. There are some systems offered by many companies but I don't know how well they'd work for you.

Just "Export" the photos of poppies to a folder you can name POPPIES 2009 and the collages will be there. Makes it much easier to find them.
I export the collage to the garden folder where I can find them, then when I open the collage file all the elements of the collage are there and none are labled the poppy collage as I named it when I exported it.
This is a "new feature of the recently updated Picasa3 It stinks in my opinion
I have it (Picasa 3) and just give a collage a folder to itself and then add individual photos of each flower.

I believe I read a thread on the poppy forum where someone started they had sown Persian Whit,Grape and lilac and Hungarien Blue poppies that failed to germinate.
Am I wrong ?
Has anyone had a problem with these varieties?
OR am I just impatient. Other varieties are going gangbusters.
