December - the end of the 2008 orchid season

Effingham, SC(Zone 8a)

My first Paph................... Paph. Maudiae 'Napa Valley'. Got in in late bud. We'll see if it survives.

Love the narrow slipper, Stu!!

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Great show guys! Kathy, like Ursula, you have a great variety of orchids. I only wish I had more space to grow some of the more interesting species like Eria, Bulbo and the like. Oncidium alliance do well in my house so I have a tendency to stick to those, but some are quite large.

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

Todd, we grow in tiers! :-)
I have a couple of Oncidium/Brassia/Miltonia etc hybrids, size is exactly the problem for me. I lost the tag on one of them, it hadn't flowered in a couple of years but is spiking now. I moved it to the front last week so I don't break the spikes off by moving it too late, it is HUGE. In its spot I could grow 20 of interesting smaller Orchids. Maybe I change my mind once the flowers are open.....it could be Izumi.
I have lots of plants from Andy, they are always of good size and healthy. Parkside, Oak Hill, Silva, Cal-Orchids, SB Orchids, Odom's Orchids, Waldor, Hauserman, Heart's Ease, Orchids Limited are all terrific. J&L sells healthy little gems, but they are not bargains. Too bad Hoosier went out of business, I managed to just get a few nice plants at their sale. I have gotten a whole bunch of interesting stuff from them through the years.( My Dipteranthus estradae is spiking:-) )
And there are many more vendors...

Stu, it is a really nice Paph! It will surely do well for you.

Sweet Sugar Oncidium

Rene,
I just got one of those Sweet sugars myself! GREAT plant and flowers!

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Mine is just starting too, but I'll wait until more flowers are open before I send in a pic.

Effingham, SC(Zone 8a)

I LOVE Mtssa. Charles M. Fitch 'Izumi'. I divided my original plant (my first Orchid divide), keeping the mother and having two medium ( 6" with small clump per ) pots (one for a friend and the other for me as a back-up), and four small pots (4" with two plants per) as my first on my DG trade list.

Odessa, FL(Zone 9b)

Stu, nice paph but Florida is a tuff place to grow them. I wait years for them to rebloom. Izumi is a different story. Mine does very well for me.

Kathy, love the red on Firelighter.

Here is BLC China Lin, 'New City'. It seems like it took forever to open.

While I was out taking the picture of China Lin, I sat three bloomers together and snapped this pic just for fun.

I've had success with reblooming paphs in Florida by keeping them indoors with their pots on moist gravel trays in a southerly facing window with translucent jalousie glass panes. I employ the fertilize "weakly, weekly" recommendation.

The third flower on Firelighter is opening today.
WOW! BLC China Lin, 'New City' has every right to take its time to open. Just beautiful! All of your pics go together so well with that mauve, pink, and green theme!

Odessa, FL(Zone 9b)

Yes Jeremy, I think that is about the only way to do it. Unfortunately, that's not what I want to do. I keep my orchids and other plants outdoors year around. I do put them in the garage on the few cold nights we have but I like to garden outdoors so I just select other orchids that fit my style.

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

Nice Paph, Jeremy
and I just love the Chia Lin. Jim, did you sniff it? The scent is gorgeous too!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Oops,Jeremy, your paph fit in so well with the color scheme, I thought it was Jim's!! LOL.

Effingham, SC(Zone 8a)

Well, guess time will tell. If it lives and doesn't produce after a couple of seasons, it can go up north. Going to keep it with the others...no time to baby it. Jim, for me (knock wood), the Oncidium families, Brassia, Mtssa., dens and Phals do well for me here too. Mostly everything is in that vein. Got one Cat. from the local garden club's nursery that bought this summer, but many say it blooms once yrly when I can get at times two periods of blooms on the others. Held off, but couldn't pass the $6 bargin for trial.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Odontocidium Wildcat 'Bobcat' is open...have another 4 Ondidium alliance spiking along with a second spiking for my phrag Don Wimber!

Stu, I think you can add vandas and epis to your list. I also do well with bulbos and I like their wierd blooms.

Does anyone want to trade Bulbophyllums? I have some I could divide, to trade for others I don;t have...?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

My paphs suffered this year because I removed them from the window and put them near the floor in the back of my greenhouse. I thought the conditions would be about the same there, but it didn't work well. I moved them because we brought new kittens into the house that considered anything in reach (including the paphs) to be playthings. I'm not sure how I will cat-proof the gravel tray, but there must be a way. I can cap clear plastic storage bins over the trays to keep the cats out. That worked for a while with some Episcia cuttings, so I may try it for the paphs.

Gothqueen, thanks so much - sounds like a good idea, but I don't think I have too much to divide right now. I will keep it in mind though.

Here is a prelude to the Bc Princess Teresa ' Princess Michiko' which is busting out of all seams again. It will open a bunch more spikes this week. The scent is heavenly!

Great show Ursula. I especially like the Renanstylis Azimah!!
Gothqueen, I only have 2 bulbos here. They are limping along although my echinolabium has started to look better. It had never bloomed for me yet.
Congrats, Todd on your oncidium alliance orchids! My Wilsonara Kolibri is spiking and this Ionocidium Popcorn 'Haruri' is opening. I have buds on two more paphs and two phrags now.

Wonderful show Ursula and Kathy. I am humbled.

I am interested in more than bulbophyllums.
Once I get my plants divided and mounted, I'll post on the trades forum. Keep me in mind, I like ALL orchids! (Except the ones that I have proven to myself I can;t grow...Draculas, Masdevallias mainly, LOL...still like them, but they don't like it here in my conditions much)

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Never heard of Lonocidium..it's a different looking Oncidium alliance. Great show Kathy and Ursula. The large catts certainly are impressive.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

It's Ionocidium with an I (eye), Todd.
Info from websites: "A new and distinct Ionocidium orchid plant named ‘Haruri’ particularly characterized by a labellum that changes color from yellow to purple during the flowering period. Its horticultural traits further include highly irregular flowering, high productivity rate, and rapid growth in addition to economical propagation via tissue culture and vegetative division."

Cross of "Ionopsis and an Oncidium." Here are pics of Ionopsis. http://www.picsearch.com/pictures/plants/orchids/orchids%20gu-le/ionopsis.html

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Well I just blew the lock off my wallet yet again and we drove 2 hours to J & L's Xmas open greenhouse sale in CT. I bought 10 mini plants! Most in spike. I didn't buy an cymbidiums (I'm proud!) and I'll post pics from J & L soon. Luckily they are almost all miniatures!

Kathy, it looks like you had a marvelous time!! I am especially curious how you are going to grow the Paphinia Majestic. It is really neat. The Stenia looks interesting! Well, actually - they all do!

Btw some people consider the Ionopsis an annual - for good reasons. :-( Your nice hybrid might have the best of both worlds.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Huh! This is the second year for blooms on the Ionocidium. You must be right, Ursula, that the oncidium part of the cross is making it easier to thrive. It looks more oncidium than ionopsis too, IMHO. As far as the Paphinia Majestic, I will grow it in the cool room. It has a new growth and a spike with 2 buds. J & L's greenhouses were 58 degrees F when I was there. I have the thermostat set for 55 F in my cool room.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Here are today's J & L pics. Check out the Draculas!!!
