Backing up Windows 98 computer

I tried to order a drive recently to back up my old computer easily but it said not compatible with Windows 98 so I sent it back. I want to back up my drive onto an external drive the easiest way before I get a new computer. I want to use a USB port (the original slow kind)...Can anyone recommend a brand?
