Hi Carol,

This is the time of year to plant Strawberries in our area; they are flowering and beginning to fruit now!
It is best to grow them in hanging baskets or up on tables to help with critter control. You can usually find plants that do well at Garden Exchange in Hilo.

The plants will produce some nice berries for you for a few months. Then when they go out of season, try to keep the plants sheltered from the hot Summer conditions. When it gets to be Fall plantlets are removed from the runners and potted up for your next crop.

I grow the wild Fragaria vesca. It makes little fruit that are white and has few pest problems. Don't get a lot of fruit, but they're tasty!

Aloha, Dave
