Medlar tree

North Bergen, NJ

Has anyone had any experience with the planting and culture of medlar trees? This would be in Zone 6.

Saint Louis, MO(Zone 6a)

My medlar sadly succumbed after about 5 years of tortured existence.
Never bore a fruit.
I think it was devastated by hawthorn-cedar rust.
I'd have pulled the plug sooner, but I recall Kavorkian got 10 years for doing the same thing.
So I enrolled him in my (rather extensive) hospice program instead. I don't think he suffered.

LOL,Weerobin !!

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I had one when I was living in the San Francisco Bay Area. It bloomed twice, bore fruit once. Unfortunately, I discovered, it is very susceptible to fire blight. Bradford Pear trees are/were very common street trees. I was able to save the apple trees that also got fire blight, but the medlar died rather quickly.

I loved the large white flowers it produced. If I could keep it healthy, I would grow it for the blooms. I never had the courage to taste the fruit. Bleating makes the fruit look rotten, which I suppose it is.

I am now thoroughly convinced not to get one, though I have admired their pictures in the mail-order catalogs.
