Chimney lining question.....

Ancram, NY

I posted before about my old chimney that had never been inspected/cleaned. I just got it looked at and the man pulled out the insert and looked in there and told me there was no lining up the chimney. He said it would cost $2,000 to install one. Until then, I am not supposed to use it. I guess if I revert it back to just a fireplace I wouldn't need the lining, for some reason. I want the insert for heating purposes but $2,000 is pretty steep. Has anyone installed this kind of liner in their chimney? Is it something we could do on our own?
