Companion planting ideas for 2009

Delaware, OH

Thinking ahead already to spring 09? I know I am. thinking about what to plant at the base of some clems....
i think i am going to use impatiens in some areas.
.what i like about them
1. they look great way into fall..till thanksgiving here in zone 5
2. inexpensive
3. easy to plant
4. good color choices
5. non invasive
7. good size for base of plant...2 or 3 impatiens from a flat will
provide nice base coverage for a good size clem

also will be using low growing sedums, such as angelina.
what i like about them
1. easy to start. pinch a piece and put in the soil.
2. very long season and perennial
3. easy to pull out if coverage gets too broad

anyone else have some good ideas for companion plants?

Annuals planted at the base of Clematis always add a nice punch of color. I like to plant various Coleus at the base of Clematis. The mid-size Coleus help to hide the Clematis' "knobby knees", especially during the Summer months.

For color around Thanksgiving, you never can go wrong with Asters and/or Mums for companion planting around Clems.

coleus is a good idea as they re taller than the impatiens..good for younger plants which may have fewer stems and be "spindlier". i 'll have to remember that one in the spring.
maybe i can do coleus and have impatiens in front of them. i have grown coleus from see too with good result. thanks for th inspiration. appreciate it.
