dianthus caryophyllus

Kerhonkson, NY(Zone 5a)

I have a hardy carnation in zone 5 with silvery foliage (single white flowers) ... last year it was under snow for a long time and apparently was still growing because when the snow melted it was flopped on the ground and horribly leggy ... I cut it back and of course it didn't flower this year. Should I cut it to the ground this fall or leave it up? I have no idea how to treat this plant ... sorry I don't have a pic!
