Diabetes question

My Dad was diagnosed with diabetes about a year ago. He has been told to check his blood sugar before breakfast every other day. His BG averages around 136. The doctor has him on Metformin 500 mg with dinner. Does this sound right?

The reason I ask is because he has not gone to a dietician even thought I told him he should. He and my Mom are checking sugars on labels rather than carbs.
