Are you talking seedlings? If so that will probably be hard to fine except of timber companies etc. You can find some bareroot tree places on the internet but it's not cheap. Retail prices.

Forest farm sells roots plants in tubes and you can get amount for your money. http://www.forestfarm.com/search/route.asp?indexkey=2S&x=65&y=13

SC has this for seedlings. http://www.state.sc.us/forest/nuravail.htm

http://www.mfc.state.ms.us/seedling_vendors.htm, that might get you headed the right way.

Not sure about what's in LA. Oh found this. These guys should beable tell you something. http://www.ldaf.state.la.us/portal/Offices/Forestry/Reforestation/SeedlingInventory/tabid/242/Default.aspx

Hope that helps.

crawdad360: I am reforesting 5 1/2 acres. This spring I planted 1,100 seedlings, most from state forestry departments (links below). Some states sell to non-residents - NC, Texas, VA. There may be others but I'm from VA so I look for seedlings from states that have similar weather and soil.

NC: Tree Seedlings cannot be sold to non-N.C. Landowners until the Division of Forest Resources declares a surplus, which is usually around mid-January.

VA accepts online orders in Oct. Store: http://www.dof.virginia.gov/nursery/cat-intro.shtml

Texas: Texas used to have a state nursery at Indian Mound in east TX - climate similar to Shreveport. I ordered bald cypresses, Nuttall oaks, Swamp Basket oaks from them - the seedlings were huge and healthy, best I found anywhere. Texas closed the Indian Mound nursery this year. They now offer seedlings from W. Texas - I haven't ordered from West Texas and don't know the quality. Here is a link to their store:

The Texas website recommends that people who ordered from Indian Mound may want to order from these sources:

ArborGen Nursery, Livingston, TX. (936) 563-2302

ArborGen has a great selection of seedlings - best selection I've seen. The prices are reasonable, even for small orders. I haven't ordered from them yet but probably will this year. They also recommend the Louisiana Forestry Office:

Campbell Timberland Management and CPT Nursery, Jasper, Texas. (409) 384-6164

Louisiana Office of Agriculture and Forestry. (225) 925-4515 or (318) 649-7463

Weyerhaeuser Company. (800) 221-4898

Good luck in your new business.

I bought my trees from:

Here's the thread showing the box and the seedlings:

I was very pleased with the cost and quality.

passiflora_pink - Quick question. I saw the longleaf pine seedlings. Have you ordered other types of seedlings from ArborGen?

I downloaded and printed their catalog - they have a great selection of hardwoods, flowering trees, and conifers. You can order small quantities from them (25, 50, 100) - this is unusual for a big commercial operation that sells in lots of many 1000's.

I want to add more diversity to my reforestation project. Ordering more species in small lots will allow me to do that.

Thanks!

Just the longleafs. They have local nurseries they distribute from; mine came from Selma. They were refrigerated evidently because UPS had a stamp that they had verified being stored within a certain temperature range. They were extremely helpful and friendly, even suggesting to me that I order a smaller lot than I originally asked for (I thought they only shipped by the 1000 at first...still would have been much cheaper than buying long leafs locally)...You can see how well the roots were developed. They sent me a survey afterward and I gave them an A+++.

I too downloaded their catalog and am considering ordering other trees.

Passiflora: Thanks for this information. According to their website, they have forests and they also distribution stations in many places through he southeastern states. I was amazed by their selection. Makes all the state nursery programs look pretty lame - but - I don't know the quality of their hardwoods and flowering trees. Since you can order as few as 25 trees of a species, this is a wonderful opportunity to introduce diversity to a reforestation project.

I divided my project into three parts and spent most of my energy on part 1, an empty 2.5 acre field. I ordered 50 of four species of oak (cherrybark, nuttall, southern red oak, swamp basket oak) - and all are doing great. I need to replace some seedlings that were (apparently) DOA. I'll call ArborGen, see what they recommend about hardwoods and flowering trees, and when they would ship. I'd like to get new seedlings planted in Dec or Jan, while they are newly dormant.

Central, AL(Zone 8a)

If you get hardwoods there post some pix; I might get some too.

Deltaville, VA

Passiflora: I'll do that.

I'm researching the importance of provenance for the species I want to order. When I get time to call ArborGen, I'll ask where they obtained the seed they use. With LLPs, this is more important than for many other trees.

Central, AL(Zone 8a)

Is it because the origin makes a big difference in the trees' survival in different regions? Or are there other factors you are looking at?

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

BTW, we've added ArborGen to the GWD here: http://davesgarden.com/gwd/c/7007/ - if you've ordered from them, you are welcome to post a review; what you know will help others (long after this thread has wound down.)

Done!

Well Evidently if somebody is looking for suggestions for places to buy seedlings wholesale, and you know of a wholesale seedling grower and it happens to be yourself, you can't say that on this website, but you can suggest other companies. Huh? I grow seedlings for a living, but since I can't say which one, I would go to Lawyer Nursery in Washington, or Forrest Keeling in MO.

Well, I had this thread on "watch".. so I could check out the wholesale trees and shrubs nurseries also ...so I checked out your favorite webpage...http://jlpnliners.com/ and I'm going to have to fix a cup of coffee to check your site out more thoroughly! Thanks for the heads up for the company in MO.
