To me they are all variations of the other. This is my first year of what I call Square foot gardening and I have my own variations from Mel Bs system. I have a good description in my journal. You can check it out here.http://www.jbest123.thegardenjournals.org/

John, thanks for the link to your garden journal. I read with interest your different ways of creating "self-contained gardens" of all shapes and sizes. Were you an engineer in your former life (before retirement)? I ask because you are so precise and so handy. I envy you your Rion greenhouse, too.

Thanks for sharing, John. Great pics and info!

By the way folks, here is a live link to John's journal.

tommyr2006, sorry I do not march to Mel’s drums. I think that Mels targeted audience is people with very small building lots, and/or patios or decks that do not have access to very much home made compost. I have tried to use all the attributes of various gardening styles with great success(biased opinion).

John: Those square foot gardens look nice, that is what I had contemplated for a while before buying Garden Patch containers, Earth boxes, topsy turvys' and the revolutionary planters and hanging baskets. I am afraid my soil isn't what it should be. Of course, I have a tendency to over water my plants also, and that is why self-contained planters that water themselfs pretty much is what I need, I'm a beginner gardener and it makes it easier for me right now.
