I am sure there are other people like me who are interested in these types of systems but do not know much about them. I have taken the liberty of reposting some links that Glendalekid/Karen took the time to research and find for us.

I had to transfer them individually so was working between windows. :) I want to thank Karen for all her hard work in gathering all this information together. There was no way to copy everything, but this is a good portion of it. I wanted to leave some things for us to ask questions about! This is a question for all of the DG members who asked for this forum:
do you want the other threads consolidated in this forum?
Before you answer, you should know this forum is open to posts from all registered members (subscribers or not.) We can change that to subscribers-only status, but we began with it open (as we do most new forums.) So if posts are moved from the subscribers-only forum, they will become open for all to read. (Linking to them in their current forums will only be helpful to subscribed members.)
Please let us know by posting once to this thread. (And just one post per member, please; it's not about debating or persuading others...just a simple casting of your personal "vote.")
Please indicate whether you would prefer to keep this new forum open or have it closed to subscribers only, and whether you want to see existing threads moved to this forum.
At the end of the week, we'll do a rough tally and make the best decision possible for the "stakeholders" of this new forum ;o)

I vote for the forum to remain open to all members, not just subscribers only. The more the merrier!!
I do think those threads have a lot of information in them that would be of value to new EBers, and it would be good to move them here where everyone would have access.

We have at least 1 member of this forum who hasn't been able to post yet due to Ike. She did post in the original request forum but hasn't been able to post yet. There might be others. Would it be possible to wait on a vote on whether to keep this an open or closed forum until all of our EB'ers have had a chance to find us and post?
This is currently an open forum. There's no rush on moving any threads into this forum, although it's usually best to try to get those "housekeeping" tasks taken care of early on.
To clarify, if threads from elsewhere are moved to this forum (and the majority vote is to keep the new forum open), they will become visible and accessible to all registered members.
It doesn't matter to me which way the majority wants to go, but a few things to keep in mind:
Most of our gardening forum threads don't have any private or sensitive content; they would be perfectly safe to share with anyone and everyone in the world.
We have some closed forums, such as the Parking Lot, which are intended for conversations that you may not want the entire world to be privy to. But even there, it's pretty easy to see that a $5 two-month subscription isn't a very high hurdle to keep people from wandering in "off the street."
With 7,000 or so subscribers, a thread in a "closed" forum should never be mistaken for a private conversation you might have around your kitchen table ;o)
I'm comfortable with this forum being open to all.
I don't see the need for "consolidating" other threads, if you just post a reference to them as IO1 has done above.
A) If only this kitchen were large enough to hold a table.
B) Nothing posted, written, received, or even thought about on line anywhere should be thought of as "private" (How many hops has it taken to get there and what is running on that route?).
C) Having a large number of "open" forums can only serve to increase interest in the site and therefore increase the subscriber base in which everyone benefits from added knowledge and views.

looking at the dates on these threads and wondering? what is or was the outcome? i'd be interested.

First time visitor to this forum on self contained gardening. I was quite hopeful to see all the links above, but unfortunately, each one is listed as subscriber only. Even though $20 may not sound like a lot to pay for this wonderful site, I simply do not have it.
Hi I'm Susan and I'm an all around newbie, to gardening and/or building a system that'll work for a garden. I see a lot of information here, which is good because I'll really need it. As for putting links up top. I agree its never fun having to search a page for that one link you're looking for. You get side tracked and like me lose your spot

It would be nice if the related threads could be consolidated into this forum.
If you can send us links to stray threads that should be moved, we'll be happy to look through them with you and try to consolidate as much as possible.

I moved the one that was in Beginner Gardening to here, but the others are in forums that are not entirely open to the public, and I think the reason for the list is because there was some resistance to moving those threads to an open, free forum.
