This is one of the mystery woodpeckers I saw on my trip to Montana last week. We were in the Northwest portion of Montana; I can't remember if this picture was taken from our cabin (which was halfway between Kalispell and Whitefish) or if it was in Glacier National Park. Anyhow, to me it looks most like a downy or hairy with its little red patch on the back of its head, but the tail doesn't look right. Maybe it's a camera trick, but I think I am seeing a black and yellow bar at the bottom of its tail. Weird, huh??
CLOSED: Mystery woodpecker 1
Hairy Woodpecker. The clean white sides to the tail count out Downy which has black spots on the side there.

Yippee! I was hoping for hairy since it would be a new bird for me. Excellent!
