I lost the tag on this one and I need to know who it is.
What is my name?
Also does anyone know what that is and how I get rid of it?
Marie: Do a search at Clematis on the Web. http://www.clematis.hull.ac.uk/new-clempiclist.cfm?base=1 That's the best place to do an on-line search.
Ok any idea about the white stuff?
Looks like mildew/mold to me. My Peonies get that. Try spraying with 1 ounce milk to 9 ounces water and see if that helps.
I think it is Clematis tibetana. It is a pruning group 3
2% milk ok?
Or it is this Clematis ladakhiana
2% is fine.
Glad you're narrowing down the field to zero in on its identity!
well either way they are both a pruning group 3 now I just have to go and look that one up!!
may be william mackensie, a tibitana type cultivar.
if you have powdery mildew, treat with physan or a bayer product for roses that sepecifies fungus and mildew
Thanks Niobe !
I had My Angel. I cut it back dure to that same white stuff and i never came back!! I want to try that one again once I figure out where to plnt the 24 I have coming!
my angel has much smaller blooms than a tibetana like william mckensie. if you bought it at a regular nursery and it has a mounding habit vs very upright it may be a kugota or golden tiara, (an d a bigger flower than my angel) and is more widely distributed
This is vining and about 7ft high right now.
Pretty clematis, Marie. I have 4 or 5 clematis in Iowa and they always start out looking really healthy but eventually have leaves that turn black (usually toward the bottom) but I don't think it is mildew like the peonies get. When I am ambitious I just cut it off but sometimes I don't get around to it.
Good that you look into what type before pruning. I have had a porcelain berry vine for about 4 years and every fall I would trim it back. It never did much. Then last fall I didn't get around to it.
This spring I went out to do the work I thought I should have done last fall and . . wow . . . it was sprouting on the old wood. That vine has grown up over my pergola and is hanging down with the beautiful little berries. how pretty (and how dumb of me).
Correct me if I am wrong but from what I have read . . . if you are treating mildew, you have to do the spraying "before" you see it . . preventative measures. I read that about the mildew on zinnias.
yes best to treat mildew before you see it. clems in shade, or a lot of leaf watering contribute. you can stop the spread after it appears, but best to treat those you know are susptible before you see it. tibietana varieties and texensis varieties are the clems who get it . they need sun, drainage and ground watering except for rain.
use physan to similar to clean nippers before and after use. bayer products for roses that specify mildew or fungus preventing as one of the claims are good on clems.
Hijack away!! i wish I could grow tha tporclean berry vine it is beautiful!!!
I never have watered this one from above it is always watered right at ground level. But I now know that theis one and the texenis are succeptable I will be better prepared next spring. I am going to need to probably cut this one back once I get the correct understanding of group 3 pruning.
Arlene i too have a couple of clematis that always end up with black leaves no clue why though!!
Well this thread is a good reminder to me to try harder next year.
