Before the storm is a great grower & has stood up to ice here. Foreign Storm is a descendant & is quite good. Midnight Oil has growing problems in some places. Dark Waters is an IB. Last spring ' Midnight Romance' (van Liere) had a nice stalk on a first yr. plant.

Badlands is one I like alot.

Mittsy: Wabash is considered to be one of the old antiques. Let me know
if you want to get rid of a couple of rhizomes the next time you dig and divide.
Schreiner's has it listed as E.B. Williamson 1936. Sweet anise aroma.

Upstate, NY(Zone 5a)

I find that I am leaning towards the dark purple ones myself. I love the rich deep purple!

Goldthwaite, TX(Zone 8a)

Deb, I grow and have been impressed with 'Midnight Oil,' 'Black Tie Affair,' 'Hello Darkness,' 'Ebony Angel,' 'Black Phantom,' 'Sambuca,' and 'Study in Black.' These are all considered "black" irises. If you want a dark purple, you can't go wrong with 'Dusky Challenger.' For a dark reddish iris, consider 'Forge Fire.' It's an older one, but I love it.
