Descent into autumn...orchids of September

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

The stereochilus was hard for David W to sell to me-he really wanted to keep it.
Big show there, Todd. Wish I could just pop up and visit! BTW, who are Robert and Pat anyway??

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

I like the Stereochilus hirtus, it is a new one for me as well. Very nice Phal. cornu-cervi. I have that one too, it is flowering almost year around, but the leaves on mine look terrible.

And what's not to love about those gorgeous Vandas!!! They are simply stunning!

We had 48 F this morning and I am glad my warm growers were all inside. :-)
( plus many of the others as well)

As I am moving a lot of plants around right now, it seemed like a good idea to take some pics in-between.

This pic was still taken in the cage - the one in the greenhouse came out too bright.
Epidendrum parkinsonianum - blooming very well this Summer. The flowers smell like a nice soap.

Encyclia cochleata 'Waterfield' is almost always flowering. It is truly a very nice and easy Orchid to grow.

Dendrobium lichenastrum var prenticei is a very cute mini - Orchid. I grow it in full sun all Summer.

Lc Love Knot coerulea is another easy mini-Orchid, but the flowers on this one are of a very good size. It could be a great windowsill plant.

Microsaccus griffithii
A tiny little thing, one is reminded of Angraecum distichum.

Kathy, you wanted to see the shoe rack?
Here it is in use. Once we quit using the deck, I will hang it over the door, since that would be the coolest spot in the greenhouse in the Winter.

Ok that's it for today! :-)

Looks great! Tomorrow after work, I will be moving orchids inside-35 degrees. I moved epis and hoyas tonite. My ankles are swollen! I will leave the cyms out with towel covers. But all the other houseplants are coming in.

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Well done Ursula! Wish I had that set-up for my orchids!...as always, I love the Love Knot!

Fair Lawn, NJ(Zone 6b)

Now where is that Global Warming when you need it? ;-)

I am glad I am not on vacation "or something" and have the time to move everything in now. In RECENT previous years cool nights like this held off until early October around here. ( There was one freakish frost in the early seventies on Sept 3.)

Put your feet up, Kathy!! ( when you are done...)

Fredericton, NB(Zone 5a)

It is 11 PM and already down to 35 F, I would say we are in for a freeze by morning.

Kathy, Ursula, you can tell fall is near just by looking at all those lovely colors you have posted. Ursula, I'm always fascinated by the great variety of not so common plants that you have to display.

Todd, I would say your plants are quite happy at the BG.

I still have the cold room to do but not till the cyms come in. Night night.

Kathy, it looks GREAT!!!
You know, as our collections are growing, moving them around as we do can be daunting at times. But isn't it all worth it? They are sitting there strong and healthy from being pampered outside all Summer!!
Good job!!

The question is, why are we so addicted to these beauties? Eating, breathing, sleeping, sniffing, looking.....

42 degr F this morning!!

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Good job Kathy. You must be exhausted. BTW, you have shoe trees? How do you grow orchids in a closet?

I am living in the lazy South. Hope all of you with chilly weather shake me up. My orchids are all out, but I've left a lot of other plants in all summer. Still need to finish emptying out, washing windows, cleaning floors and getting plants ready for the move inside. I should have four to six weeks, but we all know how time slips away. I'm in Atlanta for a few days, so I'll try to dig in. Our day temps here in Atlanta are still in the eighties and nights in the sixties. It is ten degrees cooler in both directions up at Maypop.

It's hard to gear up when it's hot out. Sposta be 34 degrees F tonite. It seems to be warmer here. But the cyms are covered.

This is my NOID ascocenda that was my very first orchid.
