What is this bug eating my cannas and how can I get rid of it?

Is it some type of grasshopper maybe?

It's a katydid. They seem to be attracted to our porch light at night and we make sure the toads get them. Or squash them. I've seen them eat entire small plants to the ground.

Thanks! I'll have to make sure to leave my porch light on and send the dogs out, they love to eat bugs. LOL

These bugs are really munching on the cannas. I hate to use chemicals on plants because of our dogs. Does anyone know of a safe way to get rid of them so as not to put our animals in danger of being poisoned?

Try dusting your cannas with diatomeceous (sp?) earth. They'll consume it with the vegetation and their little innards will be cut to shreds. It's inexpensive, non toxic and safe to use around children and pets.

Thank you so much, I'll try that.
The cannas are just now blooming again and looking really pretty. These little bugs are not wasting any time taking advantage of the blooms either so I guess that I had better get busy while I have some blooms left.
Thanks again!
Wanda
