here is a species clematis, occidentalis. it is in the second full year in my garden, it was planted in a location that did not provide enough sun, so i transplanted it last fall.this is the first bloom period i have had with it. the picture is not the best, the flowers are small, and yellowish compared to sweet autumn. in this location, i have successfully gotten it up on a arch, it is more of a sprawling plant and would love to spread out horizontally in a full sun location. the plant itself is very similar to a native north american species called virginiana , that i am waiting for the first blooms from as well.
growing the species clems can be hard in a small garden, but when you think about their role in the whole genus, you start to respect that heritage that eventually gave birth to the large flowered varieties.
