Green Iris

springfield area, MO(Zone 5b)

My mother is looking for an iris that is green, I tried looking one up on a search and I couldn't find anything. She said one of the ladies at church seen one once. Is it *really* green?
Any names?

South Hamilton, MA

Not completely green, but many have green spots on the falls or a green tint to a yellow. For TBs try Evergreen Hideway (sort of olive) and I think came out in the 1980s.

Merino, Australia

I don't know if it is available in US but I have a lovely iris with a definite greenish tinge. 'Green and Gifted', hybridised by Blyth (1989).

Deer River, MN(Zone 3b)

The only irises I've seen (in photos) that are truly green, and not just some shade of yellow that have a slight greenish tint, are a few reticulatas. That's probably not what your mom is looking for, though.

All of these come up when I do a search for "green self"...

The above iris is what iris growers call green.

This one actually looks a little green! But I think you can forget about an iris that is as green as a shamrock leaf -- at least for a while.

Baton Rouge, LA

Okay, of the list above, I went through to see if any of the descriptions did not clarify the green was "chartreuse green" or "uranium green" or "yellowish-green" etc. etc. There were a few that said things like "leaf green" or "medium green" so they would probably be more like what you're seeking. Here's that short list from the group I posted above:

Green Delight
Green Mist
Green Sprite
Green Tea
Mint Merigue
Pistachio

Hi, Wow you've really done your homework..............some great searches.

There is one iris I saw in Oregon ON A CLOUDY DAY that really looked CLOSE TO a lime-yellow side of green.
It is County Cork by the Schreiners. At this link you can see what it looks like in the sun, and then my photos in the shade. I have since bought it and still - both those sun and shade/or cloudy day photos are quite accurate. Note: I didn't 'adjust any coloring' in my photos.

In my opinion it is the greenest introduced iris I have seen to date. I have also seen a photo of a seedling by Mike Greenfield (a hybridizer). He has a very greenish seedling too. It is similar in color to Schreiners. I hope he chooses to introduce it.

Very interesting, Margie. It does actually have some green in it.

And Betty, ...........the best part (of County Cork) ........................it is a very good increaser and grower. Many Schreiner irises are only mediocre growers here, but this one does well here too. ^_^

I am always looking for growth recommendations. Thanks for the info on County Cork.
