Container Clematis suggestion please

Seattle, WA

We are hoping to plant two clematises (clemati?) in brightly colored pots in front of our gate, and encourage them to grow up & over our trellis. Perhaps we will stick a few annuals in the pots with the clematis for some additional summer color. The picture of where the pots will go is attached. I am a bit overwhelmed by looking through all of the different clematis varieties, and hope that someone might be able to give some suggestions on what we might use.

Musts Haves:
- Good for Zone 7B (pacific northwest)
- Does well in pots
- Grows 8+ feet
- Will take full sun
- Blooms compliment dark red house w/ cream trim

Would likes:
- Fragrant
- Rebloomer

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you are able to provide!

Which ever you choose, you will have to figure out how to shade the roots. Clematis likes it's feet in shade. I just ordered a beautiful one from Michigan bulb called, "Celtic Skies," you get $20. off a $40. order.

celtic skies is unproven. i too have ordered a couple , as a test plant. i would not count on it for coverage, vigor and ease of start or container hardy attributes at this point.

looks like you will want some coverage . is there a reason the clems could not go in the ground in that location? for permanent and max growth, ground is better. if you do have to do containers, think about protecting the container in the winter if winds are harsh. use a very thick ceramic container also.
with the color or your house and the brown wood gate i would think about villa de lyon , julia correvan, guernsey cream and alba luxurians ( 2 reds and 2 whites with a range of bloom times. if you really want fast coverage consider polish spirit with regular pruning to keep it under control while the others mature. also perle d azur is a fabulous clem overlooked in this country in favor of the jackmanii, perle d azur has better after bloom foliage for me, looking attractive through the season, where jackmanii really can fade, even wilt for me in the later summer.
goodluck. it will be beautiful.
love that "clemati" as a plural.

Niobe i love your suggestions. I might add 'plena elegans'. It is a wonderful bloomer and has about 6"
stems that the flowers 'bob' their heads like a bobble toy!! The color would go well and it would grow 10'-12'
It is red/purple double flower!! I would love to see it with 'Julia'.
'Polish spirit' well it is the best for an arbor. It covers and really takes off!!!
I also like 'Ville' and think 'Hagley' would be lovely with Plena giving a lot of color all season!
Also i agree that moving the rocks and putting the clems in the soil would benefit them most for cooler roots!!
Good Luck!!

love plena elegans. and we have had even better success with avante garde. pic attached of it.
it has a white or pink center and white outer and for me , the plant is a really nice foliage and long bloom season. easy to get multiple stems from the bottom. also , unless budget does not permit, plant two and three of each type to get a mature display faster.

Hey Niobe, Is Avente a more vigorous plant than plena?? I dont have Avente so I am asking?
I would love to get it as the picture of it on your arbor is a better color choice as her house color looked dark and that bright pink would really bounce off it nicely.

for me avant garde is more steadily vigorous. first year wasn't too slow and i am amazed at year three.
i have had mid season problems with plena and have never had any die back, lower browning or any issues with avante garde .i highly recommend it for both foliage coverage, vigor, number of flowers and length of blooming season.

Great !! I will have to get it. Thank You for the info!!
