Can we spicy or sweet...what is your most fragrant iris?
Your most fragrant iris?
I'll second Mittsy on that one.
me three
This one is the most fragrant one I have, or have ever smelled. But unfortunately it is a "pass~a~long" with no ID.
However, I think I have found its ID, and I recently bought some "Sunset Sky", which is an older iris, to see if they are the same thing. It seems like a very close match, if not the same thing.
If you like the colors, you may want to purchase a sunset sky. It does claim fragrance, and if it is the same as the one I have, it is exTREMely fragrant.
The ones in the picture can be smelled at a distance of over 6 feet away...
Pallida is a great one, too. Both Sunset sky and Pallida, planted together, would make a lovely pastel drift. :0)
Pallida also comes in a variegated variety, which is quite sought after:

My Sugar Blues is reblooming right now, and you don't need to go right up to it to smell it. The smell travels on the breeze. Sometimes I would call it sweet grape. Other times, it is just a wonderful sweet smell. I wish they could make cologne or body spray that smelled as nice.

Try this for a picture of Sugar Blues.
English Cottage is beautiful, Laurie.

That grape harvest makes me wish we had smellavision.
English Cottage is very pretty. Have to add these two to my want list.
Your Grape Harvest just looks like it will smell good. Very pretty.

I agree about Iris pallida, it would be hard to beat it. Not only is the scent heavenly, it permeates the whole garden in the late afternoon. Just this year I picked up some Scottish Warrior. The description says the scent is like a musky, spicey men's cologne, and so strong that you might not want to put it too close to your favorite sitting area because it tends to overpower more delicate scents. Sounds good to me! Anyone have any experience with this variety?
How about planting Timeless Moment where you want guests to leave quickly. It smells like cat pee.
So does Iris ' Lingering Love ' Aka- lingering tom cat
tazzy- I love the term "lingering tom cat" and use it all the time. May Night Salvia is a pain to deadhead because it really smells like lingering tom cat, but it's worth it when you get such rebloom.
Linda
Crimson Snow also has a lingering tom cat :o) I even wrote cat pee in my notes.
Latin Rock has a strong licorice scent.
Spiced Custard has a soapy licorice scent.

Schreiner's CE catalog has a 'fragrant bouquet collection' of 11 for $49.95:
copper classic

immortality
indigo princess
mary frances
new moon
pallida variegata
scented bubbles
thriller
vanity
Immortality wasn't a strong or perfumy scent for me. I'm thinking it was slightly soapy too.

Thanks for the info. I did not buy the set but I had thought about ordering
it for an aunt who loves scented irises. At least you didn't say cat pee.

Timeless Moment. I'm hoping it will deter squirrels from digging in the iris bed.
