Privacy screen plantings in full sun

Clarkston, MI(Zone 5b)

Our well is placed about 9 ft from our property line.
We would like to plant a privacy screen in this space.
Which shrubs/trees would be best so the roots would not interfere with the well system?
We live in southeast Michigan.

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Make sure the pipes are watertight, and you'll be OK whatever you plant.

Can one assume everegreen? If so one of the Thuja occidentalis cultivars, specifically 'Emerald or sometimes labeled as 'Emerald Green'.

My personal favorite is Juniperus scopulorum 'Skyrocket'. This evergreen has beautiful blue foliage. It does grow more slowly than the Thuja. It is quite narrow and will never outgrow the space.

A better arborvitae, in my opinion, would be 'Techny' a.k.a. 'Mission' arborvitae. It gets much wider than 'Emerald' (8' vs. 3' average) so you'll need fewer plants to begin with. On the other hand, 'Emerald' is widely available at big box stores, while 'Techny' will probably be found only at a nursery or through a landscaper.

If you don't need an evergreen screen, consider any of the viburnum species, especially 'Maresii', Koreanspice, or cranberry viburnum. All are carefree, with beautiful flowers (the second one very fragrant), and the last has excellent berry set that birds love!
