hello clem lovers. i am visiting my parents who have built a house in colorado and are landscaping. they want my advice on what types of clematis would grow here in the san juan mountains outside of durango , colorado at 6500 feet elevation. if anyone is growing clems in this area or has some ideas on what types i should order for them, we would be much appreciative.
clematis in colorado
I would think they can grow any of the Pruning group 3's and 2's..Montanas are out...Alpinas in..Floridas out...Jeanne
i think you are right jeanne. we went to a very nice garden center, they only had one clematis variety in stock "villa de lyon". the plants didn't look that great. i told my step mother to wait till spring and i would order her a few varieties from silver star to put in next june when they go back out for the summer. i am thinking maybe they do better out there with a spring planting, or the garden center would have had more in stock.
the villa's were one stem, spindly plants that needed a good whack. not inspiring. dormancy comes on early there, as fall nights are cold.
it will be interesting to see how it goes next year. i won't go back out to help her plant them, as i try not to leave my garden in may and june.
have a nice green weekend!
Niobe, THANK YOU! for the clue in on Silver Star. I've been wondering where I would be able to find the exact Clematis that I have been ever so carefully plotting to buy over the course of the next few years. And lookie lookie! They are in my own backyard :). I'll plan on giving Debbie a try next Spring.

you will be very impressed with silver star. not the largest selection, but amazing shipping method and size of roots. and a good resource too. it is my number one choice after trying most. brushwood/garden vines probable number 2. checkout joy creek too.
