My First Ever Blooms!!!

(GayLynn) Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

I have tried growing clematis several times with no luck... until I read on this forum some where that the easiest to grow is the Polish Spirit. It worked! I didn't kill it! I have 6 blooms! Now if I can just keep it alive through our brutal winters so it can bloom again next spring. Just had to show off my baby! Thanks.

It is beautiful. Not sure why you had such bad luck with clematis in the past.

It is lovely, especially displayed as you have on that delicate trellis. Good luck. If you got it this far, you've surely learned the knack. I'm a newbie too. Pam

Thanks. Not sure why I had such trouble before either. I would plant them up, they would grow a bit and then decline and die pretty rapidly.

GayLynn - Polish Spirit looks really nice and very healthy and happy, those blooms are just beautiful! I finally found some nice tall trellis for my two Ville de Lyon from Plow & Hearth, they're on sale right now so that's even better!

to build on your success with polish spirit, try cultivars in the vitacella family. they are easier to grow, less fussy and you will have more success.

GayLynn,

Very pretty!

Your clematis should survive winter as long as you continue to water it deeply when the soil starts drying out.

I live in Appleton too. All the rain we had this summer was fantastic for the garden. But, we haven't had any decent rain in the last few weeks, so I had to start watering. I'll continue watering once a week, deeply -I can't stress this enough, until we get ample rain again.

Cheryl, I'll have to get a taller trellis for mine next year. It has reached the top and beyond of the small one I provided for it this year. Gotta love those garden sales!

niobe, that is very good to know. I think clematis are so pretty and I have found a perfect spot to add another one to next year! Thanks for the info.

Thanks JuliaJayne,
This lack of rain is awful, my lawn is turning a light crispy brown. Except for the areas near the garden sprinklers.
