Raccoons, how do I get rid of 'em?

Oceanside, CA(Zone 10b)

If you know anything about how to keep Raccoons from entering my yard, I'd love to hear from it...
I have a thread going on in the tropical plant forum...

There's a big long thread about raccoons in here somewhere...

Or at least I thought there was! I just looked though and couldn't find it, so maybe I was thinking of the groundhog thread instead. Wouldn't surprise me if there were some raccoon tips in there too though.

I'd like to hear first hand if anyone has tried the predator scent thing to keep them from coming in.
I might try rags w/ ammonia, I read they are clean and won't foul their nests so they won't go near anything that smells like urine. I just hope the smell of ammonia around the waterfall won't be TOO bad.

I haven't heard of anything like that that would actually keep them out of a yard. You'd have to have your whole place smell really horrible to do any good at all. And who'd want that, even if it did work! I'm afraid a guard dog or relocation is your main options. They're too intelligent to be fooled by dog hair. They just laugh at cats. Chasing them out with a broom doesn't keep them out for long...believe me, I've tried. DH suggested using a cattle prod...well, I'm not sure about that.

If you're rich, I've heard the motion activated sprinklers work ..
