I'm looking for a bright red (not maroon or pinkish) clematis. Any suggestions?
Need a suggestion
westerplatte and allanah should be considered. ernest markham is probably sold in your area, but can be hesitant to bloom generously. if you are seeking other than a late large flowered, which most of the large reds are, consider a texensis gravetye beaute which is a smaller tulip shape flower that planted in full sun, should give many many blooms over an extended season.
another favorite is julia correvon, an easy to grow vitacella clematis that blooms late spring to mid summer and is very pleasing.
Thanks for all your suggestions! I like the "easy to grow" description of julia correvon. I looked at the pics on the plant files, and some of the pics look bright red (what I'm looking for), and some look more like a maroon. I think that the "easy to grow"-ness of it might make up for the possibility of it not being quite the right color. Thanks so much. I think that may be the one.
Well, I closely watched the area where I wanted to put a clematis yesterday, and it only gets about 3 hours of direct sun. I had assumed that it gets full sun b/c the wall is right against a bed that receives full sun, but the wall itself is in the shade :(
So, I don't think that a clematis is going to work there, after all. But thank so much for your suggestions. And that picture of your Julia with the roses are just gorgeous! I may need to build an arbor somewhere just to re-create that. What rose is that?
Thanks..yes clematis need at least 6-8 hours (like Roses) to flourish..I have clematis "Mme. Julia Correvon" companioned with cl.rosa "Eden" on one side of my Trellis Bench and have Cl Rosa "Red Eden" companioned with Clematis "Huldine" on the other side..the pink rose you see on the right is Cl. rosa "Lavender Lassie" which I have companioned with Clematis "Avant-Garde"....Jeanne
Wow. I just LOVE that combination. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
