mix your own solvents?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I have stripped an old dresser w/ Formby's Refinisher. @ $15 a qt x 4 = too much $. Any of you know a recipe for mixing solvents to remove varnish? De natured alcohol does not work as well as the $15 stuff. So what do you think are the solvents in Formby's? A recipe I do have for cleaning a piece and not stripping it is: I mix 3 parts Min. Spirits w/ 1 part boiled Linseed. Use fine steel wool to remove grime and grit from the piece. I usually clean it 1st w/ a Murphy Soap solution and if that is not enough I mix the above and apply it w/ fine steel wool. I then re-wash w/ Murphy Soap and wipe dry. Then apply Howard Feed n' Wax.
