Never seen one 10' Yank, 6-8' is common on dirt lots. Pauwlonia looks sort of similar and is a monster.

Mmmmm joe pie.

Al, They grow mostly on farms but once ina while get one in the garden. I think spelling wrong. JOPYE weed. BEV I don't know.

Medway, MA(Zone 5b)

I have a few of these in my yard every year. Ex-farm property. I like the little yellow flower hiding under the leaves!

Panama, NY(Zone 5a)

JoePye is different. It's a Eupatorium: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/72528/ and is a native

Velvet leaf is an an Abutilon http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/792/ and is an nasty alien invasive.

If your's is either, I'd say it was the second.

I def think it is velvet leaf, it was a volunteer in a pot, already yanked and tossed.

Windsor, CT(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the id- I got a load of compost that is riddled with seeds of this plant. They keep popping up everywhere. I'll keep ripping them out, the last thing I need is another invasive species around here! Argh!

Windsor, CT(Zone 6a)

YankeeCat- maybe what you're seeing are Catalpas- the Indian Bean trees. They sprout up everywhere. And get huge.

One way you could check- the Catalpas are not fuzzy the way the, er, "Velvetleaf" are...........!
