Tea Cup from Japan

This tea cup was purchased in Japan in the 1950's by my parents. It is very thin and the paintings on the cup are gold. But the unusual thing is that when the cup is turned up to drink out of you see a face in the bottom of the cup. My Mom doesn't remember anything about it or why they bought it. It is not part of a set. Does anyone have ideas??
