Oriental Lily 'Casa Blanca' blooming today.

Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)

In this view you can see the 'Casa Blanca' Lily on the left in back, Weigiela(sp?)Wine and Roses in front of it, Maiden grass in the back, sedum in front of it with Hibiscus beside it. If you look real close you can see Lily 'Black Beauty' blooming in front of the Hibiscus. Going to have to move that Lily behind the sedum in front of the maiden grass so it shows itself better :)

I'm still here... Stayed home today after Bonnie "jinxed" me, LOL! (Actually I stayed home to cut down on walking on my foot much.) Haven't done squat except pick Jap. beetles off the raspberries and green beans.

Goodnight Gracie...

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Well, the chair is a winner, so we bought it. The guys loaded it for us and we were able to get it in our house with the dolly. I'm sitting in it now and it's pretty comfy. :)

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

I am still up. Tired from all the canning today. DGD came late this afternoon with a summer cold. DS and his SO had no electricity when they got home about supper time, so they came here to eat supper.

Tomorrow DH and DGD will be doing the grocery/errand thing, while I can some more tomatoes. Tomorrow night I am having Bible Study at my house, and inviting the preacher and family for burgers and brats before the study. I am serving home made ice cream for after the Bible study. The recipe I use, you can gain 10 pounds just making it. It is made with whipping cream, half and half and Eagle brand milk. So rich and creamy. I don't make it often, because of that. Expensive to make too.

Well, checking some other threads and my e-mail, will catch up with you all later.

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

Boy, does homemade ice cream sound good! After all that jarring you did, I bet cold ice cream will be nice for a change. ;)

Good evening ....still a muggy 84* here at the homestead...

I got home to a porch full of cats again...Jim had started dinner so they smelled food...I got *escorted* from my car with both arms full of stuff by 4 of them...Down I went...on my bad knee at that...I blew a gasket, grabbed the hose and drenched them all...I am still on cat patrol with the hose and my trusty mini fire hose high pressure nozzle...every time one crosses the driveway it gets a blast from the hose...I KNOW Jim won't keep it up tomorrow...but they will get it again tomorrow night...Maybe after a few days, and drenchings they will realize this is not the place to be...One climbed the dog fence, and was in their yard and when I let the dogs out, Pilar nailed it, and Boo and Kira were helping...I got to it just in time before they hurt it, and ran the dogs back in and put it back over the fence after a good scratching from a terrified kitten...Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!

These kits have no business here...they were too socialized...If you want barn cats, the kits should never be handled...but some food provided at the barn, and especially water...They are coming to the Lana Lily pond to get it, and it's on the porch...Guess I'll have to move it out by the brooder house...These kits are starving, and people mean food...I'm tempted to take one every few days down to Dayton, and get them fixed and homed if I can't convince them to stay at the barn...I can't risk a broken leg, wrist, arm, hip or worse..and I won't tolerate it...My knee is swollen now as it is...Farmer D will hear about it tomorrow when I get home...I feel really bad for the Kittens, but I can't risk being hurt and losing work...
Enuff ranting for tonight...sorry..but pain will do that...

Sue... You gonna need TWO big boxes...1 ain't gonna cut it...LOL
Did you freeze your corn in the husk??

I'm off to my rack...Did the tub and epsom salts, and I'm whupped...Late start tomorrow...I get to leave here at 6:00am.. LOL

~~~~ and Huggs to all...
This is just the beginning...More has been done, and lots more to go ...
Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)
Dusty, ouch. I like cats, but sounds like yours like you too much. I hope that you can get that situation resolved. Maybe by taking food to the barn, you can keep them there. Took Mr. B to the garden with me the other day, the garden is at DMIL's house, and he chased a stray cat up a tree, and went up in the tree after it. He was so full of adrenelin that once he got so far up the tree, he realized that he couldn't get down, so guess who had to part way climb a tree to get him? It is a redbud with several branches low to the ground, and it is easy to climb for any animal or human. Sure hope I won't have to do that anytime soon, I didn't even climb trees when I was young!!
Gosh, taking a chain saw to the overgrown shrubs. I am guessing that is only the beginning. Gonna take them down to ground level? What do you have planned for that area?
I have so neglected pulling weeds from the flower beds with all the canning I have been doing, I will need to take a day off from that, and get out and get some weeds pulled before they decide that they have gotten a foothold and continue to grow with abandon. Will need several days to prepare an iris bed, I have several coming from a co-op. I plan to plant oriental lilies, poppies, and then sow some annuals in the bed to have some color all year long. Anybody have other suggestions for this memorial bed to Edna?
Okay, off to check my e-mail.
Southwestern, OH(Zone 6b)
Not much going on here, had a birthday party for son on Sunday, so did a lot of cooking this weekend, including home made ice cream on Sunday afternoon. Bonnie, it sounds like we use the same recipe.
No canning, but picked a bunch of tomatoes, it won't be long now if the deer don't get them first.
My peach tree that was ready to be picked, the deer must have came in with an army, and picked the thing clean overnight. I'm not a happy camper.
darius, be careful!!
Dusty, be careful!!
Nice pic GW, and nice chair.
Sue, sorry you're feeling lonely. :(
Newark, OH(Zone 5b)
OH, no, your peaches? Bummer, Melissa!
Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)
Sheesh.. our peaches are still tiny
Oh Melissa sorry about your peaches . Man it makes me want to go hunting this fall !! and get even with them Muwahahahaha
Dusty ouch on the knee. ! be carefu. THose cats are a bit to freindly. They won't be good mousers either if they are to busy being hungry ! IMHO :) I shall got get some big boxes :)
well kids are being rotten so they got banned from all electronic gizmo's until i see some imporvements on them
somthing is really bothering DS . I don't know what it is. I can only guess. Im sure its DH being gone. I know we haven't picked the right home life but its what we got and we got to keep squeezing out the lemonaid and keep adding sugar ! I guess me and the kids will be the working widows . Sheesh.
today i am canning some peppers again .
well off to get kids busy
have a great day
sue
Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)
Dusty, I'm so glad you're getting rid of those evergreens...way overgrown and ugly! It will make a big difference to the front of your house. Sorry about the kitten fiasco...sorry for the kittens, too...
Bertie brought me a head of cabbage, some beans and corn from her garden. I made corned beef and cabbage and it will be a yummy lunch today!
Hope you're all feeling better this morning.
Waddy, KY
Last night got some beans, tomatoes, squash and cucumbers picked and dug about half of the potatoes. Thank goodness DH and the two of the kids were there to lend a hand. A rather disappointing potato crop for some reason. I'm hoping the other half of the patch is a little more productive. We need to get the ground worked so we can get the turnips, collards, kale and mustard greens in the ground.
Melissa, I'd be pretty hot if my peaches disappeared overnight. I've got a volunteer peach tree outside my back door that has been a good producer. They're cling peaches but they have a good flavor and make awesome pies. I just have to cut around the worms....
Dusty, you might try feeding the cats down at the barn. They're just doing what animals do. Trying to find food. We feed them just enough to take the edge off but not enough to keep them from mousing. It might be a good idea to get them spayed though. I figured the cost worth it in not having to buy cat food for a new litter 2-3 times a year.
Mom used to make the best ice cream. Two quarts of Jersey cream, a quart of whole Jersey milk, a bunch of eggs, vanilla and sugar. 5-8% butterfat and all good! When I retire there'll be a little brown cow in the lot and we'll be back in the dairy business, albeit on a very small scale...
Kids picked the blackberries while I was at work yesterday. 5 gallons. They're supposed to be putting a bunch in the freezer this morning. We'll get some jam made this winter when it's not so hot.
Everybody, don't work too hard or get too hot.
Here's hoping that Dolly drops us some rain!
Janet
New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)
Good afternoon all. Back from the Ortho doc. He didn't mess around. Took one look at my xrays...wondered how I was walking at all! I told him...it wasn't easy!
My surgery is scheduled for September 11th. He is going to do both knees . Said he doesn't always do that, but has found it depends on the patient....and thought I was a good candidate for coming through it ok.
Of course he told me all the alternatives...like...live with it...lol....cortizone shots...gel shots. I told him I didn't want bandaids...just want to walk again and be able to garden.
I will be going to the Valley for the surgery...since it is the Number 1 rated Ortho hospital!
Soooooo...another month to get through....but hopefully it will go fast. He said I would probably have to go to a nursing home for recovery...and I asked him why? Well...you will need care for this and that. I said, Dave can do that...he did it for my back surgery. He said that's fine then...good for him!
Oh...and he also said that was a muscle in my leg that I strained really bad. Said it runs from up near the hip down the leg. Yep...sure does...lol!! but it is getting better.
Homemade ice cream!!! That sounds like what Grandma used to make...except she just used whipping cream...half and half...and milk. No condensed milk. It was wonderful!
Thanks Michele...and I hope you are feeling better? I know..it takes a while sometimes.
Yeah Dusty...feed those cats AT the barn! That might help.
Well...I need to go put my green beans on to cook. Having green beans, ham , and potatoes tonight...yum!!!
Marcy ! Where in the valley is this Hosp ? Your dinner sounds yummers.
Im glad your getting the surgery. You will feel so much better. Prayers to you . :)
well just finished my Spiced Peaches and got 6 pints ! alot of work for only 6 pints ? sheesh. I had left over sryup and canned that too.
I might do some more canning of green beans this weekend and that should be it for GB's. I think i will do some canned spuds too. Since Marcy mentioned her dinner it is sparking a canning of them .
i broke down adn am letting the kids watch tv. I am pooped .
off to take a nap
New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)
Sue...it is Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.....commonly called 'The Valley'.
Dinner was good!! Also had corn on the cob and peach pie. I'm full!
aaaah that sounds soooo goooood . Im hungry. we had hot dogs and hard boiled eggs LOl
to hot to cook and didn't feel like cooking, With all the canning i am doing , microwave is the dinner of choice. lol
Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6a)
Marcy,
Miami VAlley is a good hospital & you should get excellent, up to date care there. I worked there in Labor & Delivery, back in the Dark Ages when I was young. I'm sure you'll feel so much better when you're done & healed up!
Pat
So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)
Marcy... yippee on getting surgery scheduled! I shall hold you in my T&P...
I hauled and spread a pick-up load of mulch today... probably need at least 2 more, and that's just for one flower bed and the area under one of my new raspberry trellis'.
Homemade ice cream... YUM! I even have a churn (unfortunately, electric) but haven't made any in years.
New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)
Thanks Sue, Pat, and Darius! I am so NOT looking forward to it...but am looking forward to being able to walk and do things that I want to do...if that makes any sense? I am not a 'sit around' kind of person..never have been...and this has just really laid me low! More even than the back surgery I believe. Although...there was a time right after the very first back surgery when I wasn't sure I would walk again...but I did.
This dr didn't fool around though. He told the nurse...let's just go ahead and get her scheduled. No need to make her come back when gas prices are so high. (it's 1 1/2 hr drive). I really appreciated that..not only because of gas prices, but because I want to get it over with!
how long will you be in the hosp for ?
I hope you can have visitors ?
Been inside most of the day. To hot to do anything .
How is your foot Darius ?
I m looking forward to reading your article. I just noticed it today.
not much going on.
farm tomorrow and finishing mowing
Builder called and said the floor will be put in next week ? or maybe he said he is bringing in next week but i do know we will be going to do the geo thermal next
take care
sue
Newark, OH(Zone 5b)
I'm glad you have a date nailed down, Marcy. It's great he didn't make you come back again needlessly. You're in my prayers for the time to go quickly so you can get it all over with.
I scheduled my shoulder surgery today. It's happening Thursday, August 14, outpatient. The nurse said she thinks I will be okay for camping by September 13, but I will still be unable to lift. So, I will be okay for the roundup as long as someone else helps Howie with the tent and all that good stuff.
Catch y'all more tomorrow -- I'm heading to bed. It's been a long day and I am whupped.
New Madison, OH(Zone 5a)
Sue..in all the excitement, I forgot to ask how long I would be in? duh. But I have an appt a week or so before the surgery...and he told me to write down all my questions for then.
Kimberley, glad you got yours scheduled too. We can get this all behind us!!! I know you are ready to...too.
Darius...I enjoyed reading your article! I have a friend, who grew blackberries...the 'tame' kind. Those things were huge! And they had trellises similar to yours. They were thornless berries. They made big money selling those every summer. They had to give it up as they got older though.
I hope your foot isn't hurting you too bad? Take care of it.
Good night all.
Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)
Evening everybody. The Bible study group was here and good study, and the homemade ice cream tasted good, but wasn't firmly frozen. Ah well, guess it is the thought that counts.
Marcy, good for the date already being scheduled. Sure hope that you have a successful recovery, and that you won't be down long. Just think about how much better you are going to feel afterwards. Tell Dave to get ready to try to keep up with you in the garden when you have 1 good back, and 2 good knees!
Kimberly, I think that you should do well, as DH has been through this several times, and he has had a quick recovery, even with the most invasive surgeries. Just the "no lifting" ban for awhile. We will treat you kindly at the RU, so not to worry about that. Will your mom and dad be coming again?
Sue, it was so hot and humid here today, despite a shower we had this morning. The rain only made for sauna like conditions.
Darius, a pick up load of mulch is a lot, but I know when you spread one, then that calls for another, and another. Just take it easy is this heat, and don't get overheated How are your scratches and the cut on the foot?
Janet, whoopee on getting certified for processing other foods for farmers market. Do you have a commercial size stove and oven? I would have been a nervous wreck.
Melissa do you have other peach trees? Sorry to hear that your orchard was raided. Wonder how they know when the fruit is just about ready to be picked? I envision a "head deer chef" and he sends others out to pilfer fruit and bring it back. Then he declares it open gourmet season on the things that pass muster. Hehe. Know it is not a laughing matter for you though.
Man the hummingbirds were busy at my feeders all day today. It was almost dangerous to walk within 5 feet of the feeders. I had just been seeing them in the early mornings and later about dusk, but they were active all day. What with them flying around and the puppies under foot, it was very dangerous here.
Speaking of puppies, they are getting so frisky, and ranging further from the nest. They are beginning to chew everything, they up ended a pot of rain lilies tonight, and chewed them to bits, they are chewing the welcome mat at the front door, and a newly planted shrub. So need to get them a raw hide to help them cut teeth.
Well, off to check my e-mail, and then hopefully a good night's sleep. It is tomato juice canning again tomorrow.
Good morning everyone !!!!
sleeped in the LR again oh well. I just pretend i m japanese LOL
Don't know what is going on with our weather sheesh looks like rain then away it goes. Cooler last night and this morning .Feels good.
Defoe sounds like you busy, hope weather starts to get better for you over yonder thar.
Dusty i m going to make it over to farmers market this sat , let me know if you want to hook up ?
Im taking a break from canning got a bit burned out LOL
well off to get the DS up at going . Waiting for DH to call from china.
My DS has been talking of his older sister . Im wondering if i should let them talk to her ? its been over 8 months . I don't know if it will make it worse or better ? any ideas folks ? could use some HO ( humble opinions ) LOL
There is a long story behind the choas of my oldest . But i won't go into it . That is why im so at a loss with this simple little quandry lol
have a great day everyone
Caneyville, KY(Zone 6b)
WhooHoo...we got rain....lots of rain...nice soft drizzle...2" and still raining! It was so dry here, the grass crunched when walking on it.
Sue, IMHO, I read some of your posts last year about issues with your daughter...I think you should let them talk.
Darius, hope your foot and scratches are better.
Marcy and GW, glad to hear surgeries are scheduled! You'll both feel so much better!
Bonnie, I don't know how you do it all...makes me tired just hearing about all you do!
I'm so envious of all the canning you all have been doing. I haven't even had enough veggies to can if I wanted to...or knew how to.
Waddy, KY
Last night's baking started out as a real star. Got home, youngest had the pans all greased and floured and we got started. Mixed up the first two batches of lemon blueberry pound cake and got them in the loaf pans. Mixed up the next two batches and got them in the little individual pans. Started thinking about supper and flipped on the oven light and OMG!!! The loaf pans looked like some great gooey crud had taken root in the pans. The volcanoes of HI had nothing on those pans. Sticky mess dripping down the racks and hitting the coils. Things were starting to smoke. I couldn't imagine what the heck had gone wrong. I knew I hadn't overbeaten the eggs. I learned not to do that a long time ago but something was wrong! I thought they looked like I'd put baking powder in them and then it dawned on me. I rummaged through the trash can and there was the culprit. Stephanie had bought 2 bags of self rising flour to make her blackberry cobblers and I'd accidently picked one up and dumped it in the flour bin. Then I'd put a couple bags of regular on top of it. What a mess! I ended up sending 20 pounds of flour out the door to be mixed with cow feed this morning and now have to clean the oven again. At least I'd managed to hit the regular flour for the little cakes and lost only 2 batches instead of 4. It did put me behind again on the baking. I managed to get 10 batches of good cakes done last night but didn't hit the sack before 11:30. I've got to get a better handle on this.....
Marcy and GW, good to hear that you both had something definate to look forward to. Being able to be active and relatively pain free makes you have a totally different outlook on things compared to being housebound.
We got some rain last night and it just finished a good shower. I wish I'd got the greens and turnips in the ground before it happened but it wasn't to happen. Maybe I can get the cabbage transplants in the ground now. I hope to have heads in a reasonable time this fall. Not at Christmas like I did last year. I think I'm going to have a good cushaw, spagetti squash and butternut crop this year. At least we've so far had a much better season than last year...
We may have enough hay go get us through the winter. I sure don't want to buy like we did last year. We're still paying that off....
Everybody have a good day! If you need rain I hope you get it and if you don't I hope the sun shines for you!
So.App.Mtns., United States(Zone 5b)
Wow, what an oven mess! Sounds like something I'd do...
Sure wish my winter squash had done something... like grow!
Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)
Cookie, iwan't corned beef and cabbage, waaa, :(
Newark, OH(Zone 5b)
Happy Dance!!!!
The first ripe tomato today!!!! WOOOO HOOOO and I thought my plants were going to die. My Mom said "I think we have a ripe yellow tomato down there... go see!" Sure enough, one I have labeled Old German went on our sandwiches at lunch. Mmmmmmm!!!!! When I bought Old German last year from the farmer's market, they were orange with red centers. This was a pointed end large tomato, solid gold through and through.
We have had maybe 6 ripe little bitty tiny cherries on Matt's Wild Cherry. Just enough for a teaser. Today's unexpected ripe one was a great surprise! I thought the first ripe one would be a Cherokee Purple that may be ripe in 10 days....
Jules - who is taking the slices of tomato that we didn't eat on our sandwich to work today in her lunch! Yum!
Franklin, OH(Zone 6a)
I am soooo jealous....I want a ripe tomato!!
Crash...dinner on the table at 5:30...be there.
Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)
Well, I have been without satellite signal until just a bit ago. Had a nice rain overnight. Got out and weeded this morning, the ground soft enough to pull them easily.
Then cleaned and rearranged my garden shed.
One of the puppies went hunting with mamma this morning and didn't come home. So lost puppy rescue/search is in full swing. DH is out hunting right now. The trouble is the area is so big, and he is such a little thing. Okay, not gonna freak just yet.
In for a cool drink and then prepare supper, and search again.
Buffalo, WV(Zone 7a)
Bonnie, this same thing happened last year, why don't you keep the pups penned?
