I purchased several iris last year and planted them in Sept. While I lost a few to rot, most of them made it. However, while the ones that made it all got beautiful big fans on them, only 2 bloomed. Is this just because this is their 1st year or am I doing something wrong??
I have always loved Iris-it was the one flower my mother grew that I looked forward to every year and am now trying to build a little collection. I have several on order, but want to make sure that it is not something I am doing wrong so I can fix it before they get here, otherwise it is like wasting money of they never bloom..
Thank you, Stacey
Here is my Supreme Sultan that did bloom this year.
I need some knowledgeable help
Many times iris do not bloom the first or second year...nothing you are doing wrong.
Unless you have them too deeply or in full shade
Denise'
nope-tops exposed and in FULL sun...I just wanted to make sure that the lovely iris I am ordering from that great co. snowpeak bloom;)
BTW-I asked some ?? on that thread for you...
Dee knows everything. :~)
I have some this year that grew extremely well but did not bloom. I ran short on soils and had a bunch of very fine (cheap)compost left. I dumped it in trenches and planted them in that. They took off, but did not bloom. Have heard too much nitrogen (in the compost) will do that. Have always heard to use low or no nitrogen fertilizers if you have rich soils.
And last year I had a bed I forgot to lime. I don't get good bloom with extremes in pH. Our soil is naturally very acidic.
Hope your season is going well, Dee! Smile while ya dig! Cha-Ching!
Thanks for the info-don't think that is my case, but it is good info to have in the future:)
It does take the iris plant awhile to adjust. As new increases appear, so will bloomstalks.
