Stripping garage sale find

I use my hot gun for stripping paint off wood. I stripped part of an old oak dresser w/ the gun yesterday and the heated stain or varnish was so sticky I had to stop and clean the metal scraper often. Do you suggest a special stripping agent for this? Or will reg. stripping agent work? I started this project yesterday and wanted it done last week.
