Monarda Oddity

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

Has anyone seen anything like this before? It is a flower growing out of a flower, stem/stalk and all. This is only my second year with the monarda, so not sure if this is common or not. Interesting though.

I think most monarda do this from time to time. I think I have read some place that 'Raspberry Tart' is known for this happening more often often than some others. I have not noticed it here only once, but then I haven't been looking very hard either.

It's fairly common here, they really do crazy things.

Can you root those offshots or outshoots? Unless the camera is fooling my eyes that is a beautiful red.

Those are 2 different kinds - the red ones get funkier for me. These things spread so much I wouldn't even try, but I doubt flowers would root.

I went out and looked, my red kind had a few like this.

That's so cool! Great photos, too, of what's going on with the blooms.
