less common clematis

Delaware, OH

haku oken. doesn't give many blooms for me in year two, but they are distinctive . the central boss is very big and really stands out.

Nice I like that one!!

thanks. the purple color is not uncommon but as it opens it looks different too. attached a photo of how it unfurls. not a lot of flowers, but if it comes on better next year it will be amazing.

Clematis "Hakuookan" is Gorgeous!!..I find most of the Japanese varieties seems slower to get established for me and prefer cooler climates..do you?...Jeanne

Delaware, OH

very hard to establish forme. for instance, unzen. i don't even know if it had a bloom this year yet. i try and ignore it in the hopes that it prefers that treatment and will take off.
these are the ones for me that as mary toomey says"don't pay the rent"
but i do not have to evict them as i have adequate space.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

I planted my coveted "Hoshi-no-Flamenco" this past Spring and she wilted..still haven't seen any sign of her...I have trouble "evicting" anything until I am sure it ain't gonna perform...Jeanne

rhederiana...species. love to grow every species type i can find. they need space. this on eis huge, i just shot the flower to share.

I would love to have a yellow blooming clematis with a dark purple one - I think that would be stunning! You have some great clematis variations Niobe!

Delaware, OH

here is a bloom of golden tiara, close up. the petal is waxy and thick and the stamins are long.

Here is Huvi...I like the gaps in between the petals.

This is either Sputnik or Beata. Can someone make a positive ID on it? Maybe the smaller purple on the other side of the fence is Sputnik and the larger purple is Beata. The pink bell type is Alionushka.

Clematis, "Fascination" is a beauty, but not a well known one.

I have "Fascination" growing in a large container on my deck so that I can enjoy the smaller blooms up close.

Alpinia, "Foxy" was taken at Chalk Hill Clematis Nursery in 2005.

"Charisima", taken at Chalk Hill Clematis Nursery is another one that should be grown more widely.

Shirley of all of them I like Macropetala Blue the most!!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks Marie. Since it is a Macropetala, it blooms in early Spring.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Just Gorgeous Shirley!!

Thanks so much, Jeanne!

"Markhams Pink" is lovely, niobe. More macropetala's should be grown in people's gardens so that you could begin enjoying Clematis blooms in early Spring.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Shirley..do you think that "Markham's Pink" could flourish in my warmer zone?

(Zone 4a)

Shirley I just love the "Fascination" one....how big does that one get? What can you tell me about that one???

I really like that Perrin's Pride!! Is the color true in your pic?

Debbie

Delaware, OH

perrins pride for me is a very plum color, matte finish. really distinctive vs other purple clematis. slow to establish...hardy but not vigorous. but as it establishes, has a lot of blooms for the size of the plant and a long bloom period. here is mine planted with albaflora (herbaceous) clematis.

Perrin's Pride has been on my wish list for awhile. Gotta have it after seeing yours....beautiful!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

niobe: "Perrins Pride" was taken in a greenhouse with the hot summer sun shinning in. Also, the camera's settings can affect the color of the flowers too.

Such charming and dainty looking blossoms! So often the smaller blooms are over looked for the bigger, bolder & colorful ones. IMHO, I think these smaller flowers add a lot to ones garden and of course to our ever growing Clematis collections.

Delaware, OH

important to grow species type clematis in honor of the genus and all that it has become. they so take up more room with their vigor and would hard in a small garden however.
