We took a log about 3" diameter and sliced it about 1/2" thick. Then with permant black marker I wrote the names on them and sealed with urethane. We drilled holes at the top and attached a copper loop at the top to hang on a 'mini copper shepard's hook'. The copper ages well and the wood fits well in the garden.
