My watermelons are [FINALLY!] starting to vine, but I'm having a misgiving about trellising the minis. Having failed to completely Think Things Through, I planted the minis on the south side of the melon area. Now, I worry that if I trellis them, I'll shade the other melons planted north of them.
I have an area 24 x 20 feet for melons, with a dozen hills in four rows. The 2 rows of minis are spaced closer together, because I was going to put them on the trellis. So will there be enough room if I just let them all sprawl?
Another melon question
You don't have to worry about shading the others as they will still get plenty of sun. The vines will not create a sun block so go ahead and trellis.
Thanks, TPlant.
I've decided to orient the trellis N-S, not E-W, to minimize the shading. This will let 4 of them climb and give the other 2 more room to sprawl.
