When do I tie the leaves?

Westland, MI

My broccoli has florettes now, it's getting hot and humid and my garden is in full sun. When is the best time to tie the leaves to protect the produce?

Thank you

Lena, I've never heard of anyone tying leaves on broccoli. Maybe you are thinking of cauliflower where people pull the leaves up over the head to blanch it?

If your broc is sending out florets I'd pick them and eat them as soon as they become of decent size but yet not opening into flowers.

"Hot and humid" is when broccoli begins to be a goner; best to get what you can while you can then plant more later for a Fall crop.

Ha ha ha! Can you tell I've never done this before? Thanks!

By the way, when and how is the cauliflower done? Do you just collect the leaves and put a chip clip on them? A rubber band? :) Gotta keep checking for bugs, so they have to be accessable, don't they?

Tie the cauliflower up fully shutting out light when the heads are very small....about 1 inch. You can use twine or a cord.
