Some sort of bug is chewing all the leaves off my daylillies and leaving a blank gunky tar substances all over the place. The buds are forming but whatever is doing this is nearing the top. I've seen one red bug on one of the lillies. It is happening in different areas around the yard. It almost looks like the black stuff wants to boil or something. Any ideas on what it could be?
Black Gunk on Day Lillies
Can you post a picture? Things like aphids and scale secrete honeydew, and sooty mold can then grow on the honeydew and make the leaf look black, but your description doesn't sound like sooty mold to me.
I'll take a picture and post it tomorrow!
