Baby Birds galore!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I thought I had best start a thread for these. All of a sudden there are baby birds everywhere.

Blue Tits flitting around the oak tree with their tiny 'squeak'.

Baby House Sparrows behaving themselves wonderfully!

The icing on the cake is the Great Spotted Woodpecker, she brought her little boy today! I guess I already mentioned, it was dull again!

As she seemed very keen for me to disappear yesterday, I now know why! Today Mom GSWP sat for a start on the top of hte pergola, which was unusual. She had obviously seen me through the window, but when a baby has to be fed Mom's have to feed them.

She turned around for a better look.

Next trip she went back to the electricity pole but baby had gone elsewhere, she soon found him in the Horse Chestnut tree. I hadn't seen him fly though.

Next time she know where her baby was, in the red leaved cherry tree nearby. She flew straight there with her prize.

Another time he was in the oak tree behind the electricity pole, a long way from me but I could see his wings flapping below the leaves as he was being fed!

Yesterday I was stood under my oak tree and could hear tiny squeaks above. There was at least three baby Blue Tits flitting around the branches, seemingly having a great time as they waited for their parent to feed them.

Two in this pic.

Today I was in the garden with camera in hand, one of the baby Blue Tits was on top of the pergola waiting for parent to feed it nuts. I saw it hovering in front of the nut silo, this one was impatient and wanted to feed itself but not yet big enough! I could hear others nearby, not so bold as this one.

The top of the head will turn blue later.

Thanks OP!

Pappa came up with some food, all of a sudden all three babies flew to him with mouths open! Unfortunately that pic was well over-exposed, here they are after one got the food.

Earlier Momma House Sparrow had three to feed. I took these out the window, over the cactus plants in very dull weather!

See mom has some green stuff in her beak.

Junior, we all need our greens!

I should have some baby Goldfinches in my garden soon too. There is a nest a couple of feet from the top of my Ceanothus, which is at least 10 feet tall. I noticed it last year after they had finished nesting, I felt sure it was a Goldfinche's nest.

I looked at it not long ago and saw it was still in good condition. There was a couple of dead stems hanging down around the nest which I decided to leave 'just in case'. I have seen a Goldfinch in the Acacia tree behind it often, and lately the female had been sitting on my Nectarine tree which doesn't make nectarines.

Today I saw a Goldfinch fly down to near the nest, which is in the 'V' at the bottom of the pic..

'He' turned as if to check on the nest.

From a distance I could focus on the nest from behind, she is sat on it and is sat high too so could have babies already!

I dared to take one pic from the front of the nest, but was still a reasonable distance away. You can see her beak in the middle of her red face.

The Ceanothus is the yellow leaved shrub at the back, the nest is higher than what shows in the pic. The pergola where I hang the nut silo is to the right and there is a path between the beds there.

Congratulations on all the babies Janet! Your joy is contagious :-)
Your captions for the House Sparrow feeding are wonderful! heehee

Wonderful pics Janet! The babies are so cute!

Your pictures and stories are great.

I have noticed some full sized fledling cardinals eating on their own yesterday. (they have black beaks and look a little different than the females)

The red belly woodpeckers that have been hogging at the feeders are now working to feed two big babies. Sure is fun to see all the kids coming in.

PERTH, Australia

Great shots, Wallaby. Love the commentary from the bubs. Do they speak with an English accent?

The woodpecker feet intrigue me. Do they have two front and two aft, or do they tend to splay according to what they are attached to?
