Household Tips

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I have not tried these but I recieved this in a email and thought i'd share. Some sound very interesting and have peaked my curiosity...

How many of these did YOU know about?

A sealed envelope - Put in the freezer for a few hours, then slide a
knife under the flap. The envelope can then be resealed.
(hmmmmmm...)

============================================
Use Empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them
neat and you can write on the roll what appliance it belongs to.

============================================
For icy door steps in freezing temperatures: get warm water and put
Dawn dish washing liquid in it. Pour it all over the steps. They won't
refreeze. (wish I had known this for the last 40 years!)

============================================
To remove old wax from a glass candle holder, put it in the freezer for
a few hours. Then take the candle holder out and turn it upside down. The
wax will fall out.

=================================================
Crayon marks on walls? This worked wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped
in baking soda. Comes off with little effort (elbow grease that is!).

===========================================
Permanent marker on appliances/counter tops (like store receipt
BLUE!) rubbing alcohol on paper towel.

============================================
Whenever I purchase a box of S.O.S Pads, I immediately take a pair of
scissors and cut each pad into halves. After years of having to throw
away rusted and unused and smelly pads, I finally decided that this would
be much more economical. Now a box of S.O.S pads last me indefinitely!
In fact, I have noticed that the scissors get 'sharpened'' this way!

===========================================
Blood stains on clothes? Not to worry! Just pour a little hydrogen
peroxide on a cloth and proceed to wipe off every drop of blood. Works
every time! (Now, where to put the body?) LOL

============================================
Use vertical strokes when washing windows outside and horizontal
for inside windows. This way you can tell which side has the streaks.
Straight vinegar will get outside windows really clean. Don't wash windows
on a sunny day. They will dry too quickly and will probably streak.

============================================
Spray a bit of perfume on the light bulb in any room to create a lovely
light scent in each room when the light is turned on.

============================================
Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers and your clothes will
smell freshly washed for weeks to come. You can also do this with towels
and linen.

============================================
Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3
hours prior to burning.

============================================
To clean artificial flowers, pour some salt into a paper bag and add the
flowers. Shake vigorously as the salt will absorb all the dust and dirt
and leave your artificial flowers looking like new! Works like a charm!

============================================
To easily remove burnt on food from your skillet, simply add a drop or
two of dish soap and enough water to cover bottom of pan, and bring to
a boil on stove top.

============================================
Spray your TUPPERWARE with nonstick cooking spray before pouring
in tomato based sauces and there won't be any stains.

=============================================
Wrap celery in aluminum foil when putting in the refrigerator and it will
keep for weeks.

============================================
When boiling corn on the cob, add a pinch of sugar to help bring out the
corn's natural sweetness

============================================
Cure for headaches: Take a lime, cut it in half, and rub it on your
forehead. The throbbing will go away.

============================================
Don't throw out all that leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future
use in casseroles and sauces ......... Left over wine? What's that? :)

============================================
To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area
and you will experience instant relief.

=============================================
Ants, ants, ants everywhere ... Well, they are said to never cross a chalk
line. So, get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants
tend to march. See for yourself.

============================================
Use air-freshener to clean mirrors. It does a good job and better still,
leaves a lovely smell to the shine.

============================================
When you get a splinter, reach for the scotch tape before resorting to
tweezers or a needle. Simply put the scotch tape over the splinter, and
then pull it off. Scotch tape removes most splinters painlessly and easily.

=====================================
Now look what you can do with Alka Seltzer........
Clean a toilet.
Drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets, wait twenty minutes, brush and flush.
The citric acid and effervescent action clean vitreous China.

============================================
Clean a vase.
To remove a stain from the bottom of a glass vase or cruet, fill with water
and drop in two Alka Seltzer tablets.

============================================
Polish jewelry.
Drop two Alka Seltzer tablets into a glass of water and immerse the
jewelry for two minutes.

============================================
Clean a thermos bottle.
Fill the bottle with water, drop in four Alka Seltzer tablets, and let soak
for an hour (or longer, if necessary).

============================================
Unclog a drain.
Clear the sink drain by dropping three Alka Seltzer tablets down the
drain followed by a cup of Heinz White Vinegar. Wait a few minutes,
and then run the hot water.

============================================
Do your friends a favor. Pass this timely (and some not-so-timely)
information on to a friend! I just did.
Makes you wonder about ingesting Alka Seltzer, doesn't it?

Nothing about deer!!

Southeastern, CT(Zone 6a)

Perfume on a light bulb gives a light scent. What if you want the perfume scent?
LOL - Ha!

Thanks for sharing, Celeste. The only one I currently use is the boiling the stuck on mess in the skillet.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

No, SORRY!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I've done the light bulb thing....the skillet boiling, rubbing al. on counter tops, and a few of the others. It's all the things you can do with Alka Seltzer tablets that gets me.

Efferdent that denture cleaning stuff will take stains out of some clothing.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

With the teeth still attached??

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Man I should have pulled this up earlier, I had to steam open 2 letters.

If there was no teeth they would not be called dentures :-)

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Careful with the perfume on the light bulb or you get a not-so-light burning smell. Maybe it'd work on the shade better than the bulb...
i'd think the hydrogen peroxide would be likely to bleach your bloodstained clothes, unless they were white, but that may be preferable...
i've done the fabric softener in drawers thing, but mostly i use nice smelling soap. i also put it in suitcases - added bonus of always having soap you like with you on a trip.
Never done the dish detergent in warm water for icy steps, but i did it with table salt in warm water after an ice storm in STL, and that worked pretty good... (it carved just wide enough of a path to walk carefully down. There was a lot of ice!)

Paul an I were given one of those tart melters. I think Yankee Candles made it. It's electric, looks like a teeny version of a crock pot, but the top part, which is ceramic, you place one of those wax tarts in. If you want to get the tart out really easy...one of the steps above applies to this...place the whole ceramic "bowl" with the tart in (That you want to replace), in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes...take out of the freezer, and push...the whole tart will come out. The great thing about this, you can reuse the tart, without having to scrape, melt and dump the old tart! Did not know this until Paul stumbled into my home...lol.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Would Paris be considered a wax tart? I would say yes.

Cleveland,GA/Atlanta, GA(Zone 7b)

Geez Celeste. Where have you been all my life? You mean I did not need to be buying the expensive, tooth bleach stuff from the dentist to clean the toilets. Speaking of loos, the English use "loo rolls" to grow seedlings. Great greenway in my opinion.

I have no Polish jewelery so I can't test that suggestion.
Thanks,
L

Kershaw, SC(Zone 8b)

Victor, definitely a tart...not sure if wax would be the exact adjective I would use...lol.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

There was a post on a forum about making toilet paper pots - thought it was a good idea.
Thanks Celeste.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Great thread and even greater ideas!
I've tried most of them, but I had never heard of the Alka Seltzer ones.

REMOVING MUSTY SMELLS FROM BOOKS

To get the musty smell out of old books, take two tablespoons of ammonia, dilute it with an equal amount of water, then use it to wet a sponge. Squeeze the sponge almost dry and wave it over the book. That should get rid of smoky and musty smells.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Does it work on musty people??

dunno ask the Munsters?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I love this kind of stuff... thanks for posting it Pixie

going to have to try the dawn soap on my steps this winter

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, but then you slip on the soapy steps!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL... didn't think of that

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

But they'll be clean!

Westbrook, CT(Zone 6a)

Celeste, you have unwittingly opened Pandora's box. I made the mistake of showing your list to DW, and the result was a flurry of activity...

Plop, plop, fizz, fizz
I get no relief from this.
Showed my wife your cleaning hint,
Gave her eyes a knowing squint.
Roams the household helter-skelter
Filling bowls with Alka-seltzer.
Foaming basin, vase and pot,
Where I lave or rinse or squat.
Acts as though I am transgressing
To disturb that effervescing.
Never thought I'd have such troubles
Dodging vessels filled with bubbles.
But I must accept such cleaning quirks,
Seems the crazy tactic works!

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

very cute

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

cute and impressive

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Oh My Don!! What have I done?? Loved the poem and so glad she tried it and it worked!!

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the poetic giggles this morning, Don.
We don't hear from you nearly often enough, and when we do ...

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I love it Don!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The night before leftover Pizza. Put in a frying pan not the Microwave. No soggy pizza.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thanks Sherrie, I don't like soggy pizza!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I heat it in the oven.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Me too. i do leftover chinese takeout in a frying pan though, and microwave the rice separately. i'll have to try pizza in a frying pan!

If I am hungry - I want it NOW. I wont wait for no oven. Frying pan or cold. First time I did it this morning, was pretty good.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Breakfast of champions!

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

cold pizza and warm beer?

The "unofficial" breakfast of champions started back in the 80's. It was wheaties and budweiser.

I will order the cold pizza and warm beer first.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

ah... i knew beer was involved somehow.

If you had the choice of wheaties and bud, or that weed that had to be cooked 3 times in another thread. I will take the WEED !
