Black flowering plants

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

I want to have a bed of themed plants/flowers, including black flowering ones. As far as I know there is not an option in the plant files to search by color. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks! Jennifer

There is a way to search by color--you have to go to the Advanced search, and that will let you browse by flower color. But black isn't a color option since most "black" flowers are really deep purple or burgundy or something like that so I'm not sure if it'll be really useful for you. The other thing you could do is try going to the PF specific search and put Black in the cultivar field, you'll get some stuff that's not what you want but I bet at least some of the black flowers out there have black in their cultivar name (although you'll get a lot of ones with dark leaves doing a search like that too)

I'm pretty sure there's a black hollyhock and a black tulip, and then there's Tacca the bat flower which comes in black or white (it won't be hardy in your zone so you'd have to bring it in for the winter).

Thanks so much! Jennifer

Check out Midnight Oil iris too!

Here's a cool one I just ran across on Top Tropicals website--rather pricey and most likely not hardy in your area, but they say it's the blackest flower in the world! http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=Lisianthius_nigrescens

I purchased a Black Knight Butterfly bush this year. I don't expect to see blooms on it till next year. The description calls for deep dark purple flowers. It supposedly grows 6-9 feet tall and wide. Hardiness zones 5-9.

Some Black Mondo Grass might provide an interesting border. It's expensive. I'd like to grow some here but am afraid I live too far north.

It's supposed to be hardy to 6a, so if you've got a part of the yard that's a little more sheltered you might give it a try, just put a little extra mulch over it for the winter and see what happens.

Aquilegia 'Black Barlow' is another good one.

"Black prince snapdragon". The foliage has a reddish cast, too.

Gary, Black mondo grass grows fine here in St Louis area. We're not too much off from your zone.
I think it would do fine there.

Thanks Weerobin. I think I will try growing some. While looking at other plants today I re-checked my zone. Back in 1990 I was Z5. According to the Arbor???? (I forget) I have been in Z6 since 2006. Global warming was the reason given for the change. Black Mondo grass is rated for Z6.
