Well I got him planted. Here he is.

cute

I'm really pleased with him. He's my calico coleus cat. He's looking rather droopy today, but I have no doubt he'll perk right up in a couple of days.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

OH Janet! That is way too cute! LOVE it! Can't wait to see him filled out and it won't take long!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Mattsmom...Don't you just love Tom Colicchio? I'm not really into bald men, but there is something about him that is so nice! If I knew then, what I know now and had to do it all over again...I would have went to culinary school!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

I haven't had a chance to plant anything new and we were away last weekend...but I'm so happy with my renovated fountain that's been through a lot! (tipping over and losing it's base!) These sunpatience are really true to their reputation. They're surviving in full hot afternoon sun, 96 degree weather, unbelievable winds and a drought!

I went out last night late to give my front planters a nice little drink. All of a sudden something flew at me and I'm like WTH??? This poor bird was all disoriented and was flying and hitting itself in the ceiling of my covered porch. I think it's a Dove and it's built a nest and is living in a Plastic tree left over from Christmas! hahaha. After it flew away, I'm looking into the tree and sure enough there's a little nest built with 3 little white eggs! I felt so bad??? I'm out there this morning...and here she is sitting quietly on her little nest. OMG! It's really strange, every home I've ever lived in, I have a bird nesting outside my door - even in a 9th floor Condo in Canada. They're usually Cardinals though.

An incredibly relaxing spot at my front door...

Everything looks great. Unbelievable how those caladiums have filled in Kat. Your front door seating area looks so nice and shady. I could sit there for a while.

Tomah, WI

Kat- Your fountain of impatiens is looking just beautiful! I bought a few caladiums this spring, they sure don't look like yours. Our growing season is soooo short, and started very late this year. Top Chef is one program I do watch when they have a new season. It can be such a hoot! Yeah, Tom is cool. Something about him.

(GayLynn) Appleton, WI(Zone 5a)

Kat your fountain planter is beautiful... so perfect... looks like you sheared all the flowers to the same heighth. Very nice. Love your caladiums. I grew a huge pot of them last year I really like them. Forgot all about them this year.

Beaumont, TX(Zone 8b)

The caladiums remember though and as soon as your pot is warm enough, their little heads will poke up. I'd forgotten about mine too, until they started waking up.

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

Kay,
Everything looks so beautiful. Hopefully in a couple of weeks mine will start to look better too.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks all! Janet is right - as soon as things get warm, the Caladiums will go mad. I just planted some 2 weeks ago in the ground and they're up already. If I had of planted them back in March, it would have taken 6 weeks.

Here's a pot I planted about a month ago. I love the Galaxy's - they can handle sun and grow so huge. There's only 2 bulbs in this pot.

The Lizard Lounge is getting a little overgrown, but I love the colors of these foliage plants...

I re-potted my poor winter shocked Plumeria a couple weeks ago and it's now starting to bloom like crazy!

The Huntress is at it again! My pooches love the lizard lounge - they're in and out of the pots, as though it's they're own little personal tropical rainforest. hehe

And by the way Mattsmom - That Mossy Lady is just unbelievable! So cute. You're all giving me some very crazy (but good crazy) ideas! Oh...If I just had a few more hours in a day! LOL

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

Kat,
Your containers and garden are so beautiful. Mine aren't doing so good since we haven't had as much sun as we usually get. The farmers are happy since we have had more rain, but for those of us who have sun loving plants things aren't going so good. Tina

Kat- How is that flamingo topiary coming along? Can't wait to see pix.

Thanks - He was a real sweetie

Kat you've got to check out these container arrangements that DG'er goodolebake creates each year. Chris Baker is the owner of Baker's Acres a nursery in Ohio. We all drool over his coleus.

Here's the thread

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/632031/

Be sure to look at this year's containers too; they start on July 3, 2008 and you'll have to scroll down quite a bit. I think you'll enjoy the show!

I have been drooling over the Lizard Lounge for ages now and have decided to see if I can get a bank loan to start a nursery/ garden center in Port Charlotte, FL ! Then I can sell my wares to KatG and use her pictures to show others people what can be done with potted plants ... KatG, I think I could be rich in no time because your pictures would sell everything for me!

Carrollton, TX(Zone 8a)

Love it Zanymuse! - Great Idea - You'd have to make sure you're the closest nursery to Kat's house - real close - so she could scoot over on her golf cart - and not be tempted to go somewhere else - and of course you'd have to have a GREAT selection - hehe

Great idea Zany!!!!!! LOL!

Ocala, FL(Zone 9a)

You guys are truly inspiring - I hope to have some pictures to share in a year or so ;)

As it is, I'm still new to FL container gardening and it's unlike anything I did in Michigan, LOL. I've started easy - Sunpatiens in the front containers - later found a discontinued Splitpot for my lamppost and added in a scrawny, half-dead sweet potato vine to the varigated Sunpatiens I ran across at HD late in the season. It's now taking over the world!! I keep snipping pieces off & sticking them here and there in other containers. Same with coleus - snip & stick, & they thrive!

We've just finished "caging" our SW facing lanai (half covered, half open). Playing with Persian Shield, caladiums and tropical hibiscus & crotons (those will require some protection this winter, we'll see how I do.) I've recently discovered Encore azaleas & investigating if they'd be a good choice to surround the lanai area...

Oh, and also have a nice catnip plant to appease our two bengal cat "gods"! (Love those doggies, though!)

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank-you Tina - Containers are doing good, just growing too fast though. I know that doesn't sound like a real bad problem..but .I think I need to start planting with future in mind instead of instant gratification!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

mattsmom! Just haven't gotten to it yet as I've been busy with work! (the nerve of an occupation coming between me and my gardening!) I still can't get over your lady! When I get some time...it's #1 in line! This is usually the time I take a break from planting as I have about 2 months where things just grow and get crazy and there's nothing you can do about it. You can replant, but it's no use as it's all going to be the same. All I can do is cut things back to keep them relatively neat.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Kitty-Sweet picture and from what I'm reading...He was a real sweetie? I'm assuming he's no longer here? Ahhhh, I'm sorry!

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Patty: Thank-you for that thread! WOW! Those are absolutely incredible! Were do you guys get such different species of coleus? I totally love the plant, but we just get such mundane varieties around here. I'm assuming that you're growing a lot from seed or cuttings.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Ummmmmmm Zany! OMG! You don't even need to advertise, I'd probably buy everything you had! hehehehe... Then with your profits we could sit and toast with Margarita's in the Lizard Lounge! hehehe

Scotia, CA(Zone 9b)

Now if I can just get that business loan...

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

denisemb: Sounds like you've got all the right Florida plants going on. You have got be careful in your zone but I think everything you've got going is sensible. You also have a better chance of thriving Azalea's than we have down here (I love them and they just won't survive-too hot!) My persian shield is really not great this year - some pots are thriving, others look really sick. Again, I think they're probably doing better where you are because of the temp. Please post some photo's when you're ready.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Kat most of us coleus addicts that hang out on the coleus forum order from online companies and buy whatever we can find in our area. My favorite company and one that gets a lot of positive feedback on the coleus forum is Rosy Dawn Coleus Specialists. Unfortunately they have stopped shipping this season. There is also an online company called Gebharts and it also has received positive remarks.

Port Charlotte, FL(Zone 10a)

Thank-you so much! I had no idea. WOW!

What's your favorite?
