I would cut out anything that doesn't look healthy, branches and leaves. Bayer makes a product called Desease Control.I would use that ASAP. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I have cut out the bad areas now. I'd prefer not to use chemicals. That's why I'd like to know what the disease is exactly. If I understand it correctly, if it's phytoplasma, then it's hopeless and I should just cut the whole bush out, get rid of the stump and suckers and plant something else. If it's anthracnose, it's treatable, plus I won't worry that it will infect any of the other plants.

It does look like dogwood anthracnose.

Prune everything off that looks like its infected and dispose of the trimmings by burning them - don't toss them in the trash. Clean your shears with alcohol or bleach in-between every major cut to avoid spreading the fungi infection.

Both Ortho Garden Disease Control and Bonide Fungonil is listed for use on dogwood. You should be able to find either one at a garden center. Spray religiously according to the directions.
