oak wilt

rhinelander, WI(Zone 4a)

saw a message that said don't prune in spring, it would be better to prune
during winter when oak is dormant?

Holland, OH(Zone 5b)

Don't prune April through June. Locally we don't prune until after the end of July to be certain. The following link explains the rational for when and when not to prune as well as other facts about oak wilt that anyone managing them needs to know. It's good that you are checking before you get out that pruning saw.

Here, the Texas Forestry Service says waiting until the insects are not active before pruning is best, but if one must prune, the TFS recommends using a sealer. Sealing tree wounds is usually not recommended, but this is one instance where it is.

thanks for the link, some red oak by us get a leaf shape that make the ends
of the leaves stubby ; red oak leaves resemble white oak with the leaf tips
rounded off, doesn't seem to hurt the tree. jim
