June 2008 Forum

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

Sorry, I just made new forum for June 2008 ...

I just got feel better from the trip... I just lucky got home before storm kick in....I made it home then an hour later here coming more raining and flooding!

Pepper, I never leave any drinks or some creatures near my keybroad or laptop get fried! As I was little, my mom warning me to not bring any food in my bedroom so alot of ants crawling all over my bed! Never leave any crumbs for that... Learn the lesson!

I took this early this morning I was in just between the state line Iowa and Missouri...

I normally keep my drink on a nightstand next to my desk. But my nightstand is directly in front of my window so it's more attractive. But my desk is off to the side and I rarely see ants on it and never in my drink. lol. So far anyways.

The soil in the front of this picture is the best we had in that garden spot 12 years ago now it is the worst so never give up at building soil of course there is 62,400 pounds of rabbit balls on there . The little barn used about 500 pounds of feed a week figure that gives you at least 300 pounds of manure times 52 weeks times 4 years and it all went on that garden The first time we tilled that area it took me 2 hr a day for three weeks at least and never did get it really tilled i did most of it the last Thursday in about 3 hr and got my tomatoes ,peppers, eggplant, squash, and cucumber all in Friday still have more squash, beens, and corn to plant it will be a few days now we had 2 inches this afternoon in about 30 minutes

I got message from Pepper:

Pepper having problem with her computer on and off and brought new wireless keybroad and mouse won't work, too! She will be out of touch...

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Thanks, Rusty. I have her cell and house phone #s so can keep in touch with her that way. We have had wireless and it worked ok for some time then the sensors started not working consistantly. We went back to corded equipment.

Dave, that is a lot of bunny poo. It should grow wonderful produce this season. Do you plan to market garden this summer or is it all just for yourselves and family?

Humansville, MO(Zone 6a)

Just for us and family If there is any left over will give to the senior center

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Everyone must be out in the gardens! LOL...not much traffic on this message list.
Can someone tell me how to catch a snake in my garden room. DH is terrified of them, I don't want to touch it but would like to put him back outside. Any help appreciated. Is there a snake trap?

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Can you open the door and just shoo it with a broom? How large is it? How about animal control if you are inside the city limits? I had a small black snake in the yarden the other day that I managed to push across the yarden to a bucket all the time yelling for Kyle. He finally came and took it way away. I told him I had been kind to it. Usually I just kill them.

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Snakes do not bother me. Just be sure it is not dangerous and wack it with something. We have had a rattler in the garden hose stand. A small rattler is more leathalk than a large one by the way. The venom is very strong in them.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Lived in Texas for awhile so I know about rattlers....LOL. Lived in a townhouse in the city and had one curled up on the side walk one Sunday morning by the newspaper.

I tried hearding him with the broom, but he did surprise me by striking at it. He is very dark with a cream colored belly. He needs to leave but I haven't seen him now for two days.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Hi guys!! Am at library for now. Will be 2 weeks before I get everything fixed or figured out. That's when my cousin will be in town to work on it. Just thought I would let you all know I am doing well.

No major storm damage at home either. Lots of uprooted trees at work though.

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

I doing fine but it still sore on my hip so I will be okay for while...

As today, I notice baby hawk just sit on the chain link fence so I was hurry up to get my camera's len change to 75-300mm and sure it just perfect pic... As hawks saw me that I took pic both of it then on right flew away...

Good to hear from you, Pepper. I'm so sorry you are having such computer woes. I remember being without one for periods of time. We have become so dependant on these things to keep in touch with friends and family.

Good picture of the hawks, Rusty.

I spent some time in the hospital Friday & Saturday with respiratory problems. My local doctor thought it might be a heart attack so he sent me by ambulance to the University of MO hospital for a more experienced team of specialists to look at me and decide. They decided in the end it wasn't my heart but I am now scheduled for a stress test on Wednesday. I have ended up losing my job over this but the doctors don't really want me in the heat and humidity of the cafe' kitchen.

I'm so sorry to hear of the trees being uprooted at PG, Pepper. What areas are they in?I really miss being able to come up but it seems every week I am either sick, have appointments I cannot miss or don't have the fuel money. Getting tired of it.

I finally got my green beans planted a couple days ago. The asparagus beans(about 1 5 - 20 seeds)will be quite late bearing so I planted 6 Blue Lake seeds in containers to help me thru. I wonder how long the rest of the seeds in each package will last.

Must close and check out other forums. GOD bless and keep each of you.

Elle, the egg isn't suppose to stand upright. In the nest eggs always lie on the side and the hen rolls them daily.

Something is killing my ducks and geese. Our 6 year old Indian Runner hen came up missing 2 nights ago and something killed our 9 year old Marsha goose this morning while Holly and I were both gone. We wonder if 2 of our 'good' dogs have teamed up to be 'bad' dogs in that way. Tho none of them act guilty like they usually do when we find something they had done & should not have. One more part of Jack gone. He loved her so much. We got her when she was 3 days old and hand raised her to be a pet. She was so loving and gentle. The only plant she ever bothered was Holly's strawberrys. She was easily stopped from that each spring. I is like losing one of our children.

Madison, IL(Zone 6b)

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Unless one has had pets, one can not begin to understand how they become part of the family. I hope you figure out soon what's killing the ducks and geese. Poor things!

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

We think we know what happened. My little dog Nita likes to chase the birds just to make them run, flap their wings, and sqauk. Their Sheltie Zoie has started killing vermin. Nita got the birds running and Zoie moved in for the kill. Whether or not Nita got in on the mauling we will never know. But I no longer allow her outside when the 2 remaining waterfowl are outside the pen unless I am outside too. I know better than to expect anything to be done about Zoie since no one saw anything happen.

Humansville, MO

Am back online again. Finally went ahead and got a standard board to tide me over.

The trees that were uprooted were around the VEC landscape, the nature trail, and in front of the daycare. Those are the ones I know of. There were only a few trees but it was noticeable.

Bad storms coming so everyone stay safe.

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

I having a big T-storm on way here after 11 pm or later on...

I just did plant some seeds of sweet corns, 2 kinds of squash Black Beauty ( I brought zucchini from store) and yellow crockneck also it will be nice to have watermelons, too... I just put all of this for 3 earthboxes already today... Tomatoes getting bigger and got some tiny or small tomatoes and I got some purple peppers from Central Midwest RU last April and sure it alot of purple peppers some tiny, too....

Rusty is doing okay but he get tried of jumping off the deck and jump back to the deck and lying down then watch! When flies picky on his hind legs and he just hate it bark and pull his hair huge spot bald! Ouch!

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

It just start T-storm now and got to shut my laptop sooner...

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Rusty, I use insect repellent/killer from Avon on my Penny who is so sensitive to flies, gnats, etc. There are also products like FrontLine, Advantic(?), and Bronco(concentrate or ready to use in the horse section of animal supplies)which will last for a few hours.

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

Well, Bad New! I just got home from Food Mart andI smell something wrong and Rusty was scared and went outside quickly I almost lose my home which lightning hit pretty hard and got my ice box quit working and I look and smell something burning in my kitchen that it was on wall burn black with plug in and sure I am lucky but my ice box is working now Sheesh, I call for help and here's come ambulance and fire truck to check it out at my home and everything is okay for now This is my first time never has like this! It's really scared of me... I call my insurance on my home and it will be hopefully get my kitchen wall and electric wire repair for sure (I pray for it)....

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

Glad to hear it wasn't worse!!

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

That was a close call, Rusty. I'm thankful you came home in time to keep it from going up in flames.

Humansville, MO

We got a giant oak in the yard that acts like a lighting rod. It hits the oak and travels up the yard lightin g wires and does all kinds of silly things. we been hit 3 times.

Rusty---- My bet is the lightening came up the ground wire I wqould not be surprised if you no longer have a ground wire in that plug and maybe some others in the house.

Southeast, NE(Zone 5a)

That's scary, Rusty. I'm glad you and your dog are okay. Whew!

Hughesville, MO(Zone 5a)

Good point, Oz. Rusty, if you know an electrician I think I would have him/her check that out.

I finally have all of the cabinet doors washed off. Next step is to take the handles and hinges off one set at a time and paint them, then replace the hardware and get Kyle to rehang them for me. I may be able to do some of them myself but that left shoulder still limits my movements of that arm. I want to do the hardware one set at a time as the sections of the cabinets are color coded by handle color so I want to know which door goes where. The number and placement of the panel nails in the doors tells me a lot about where it goes too. I hang a lot of items on panel nails on the outside of the doors for easy access. I know, not too nice looking to some, but handy and keeps me from having to search for things when I need them. Of course I can wait until all the doors are painted and rehardwared before asking him to help rehang them. But I feel a surge of excitment having gotten this part of the task finally done.

I need to get a gallon of gasoline tomorrow for the Stihl weedeater and other tools that use that mixture. There is one bed out there that has huge weeds. I want Kyle to use the Stihl with the steele blade to cut off everything and then help me to cover it with black plastic to prevent the return of the weeds. If we use really heavy plastic it will last for 2 or 3 years if we weight it down properly.

My very late planted caladiums are popping thru the ground. One has enough leaves for me to be sure it is probably White Christmas. One of my favorites. I know there are others much like it with other names. This was a bag of mixed cultivars from WM.

The lime grean EEs from PG are coming up and growing nicely too. Considering they were buried in spent potting soil for weeks I'm pleased they are doing anything. I found them by accident last week when I was taking soil from the container. At that point they were totally white.

It is still nice enough in here that I have left the windows open all day. Probably will until tomorrow. The news if finally taking precidence over sports so maybe I'll find out what the weather will be like for the next 48 hours or so. I love it when I can air out the house like this.

Still can't bring myself to take Nita to the shelter. I wish someone would do it for me but I know no one will. If they do and it turns out to not be her doing it they will be afraid I will blame them for losing a beloved pet. Kris says I should have Penny euthanized(?)becaise of her allergy problems. I have thought about it. But how much of myself - and my pets are a huge part of me - can I lose or give up before I am nothing but an empty shell who no longer cares about life? I don't think they think about that.

Listening to news & weather. GOD bless and keep each of you.

Madison, IL(Zone 6b)

Pepper,

All the plants that you gave me from PG are doing nicely. I can't believe that all survived, but they did.

Thanks again,

Betty : )

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

I have 10 ft. rod in ground somehow got hit the next door big old oak tree got tree's skin just peel off pretty long one about 12 ft. so I has insurance take care of it....

Gravois Mills, MO(Zone 6a)

Rusty----Yes it would be best to leave it up to your insurance and a qualified electrician unless you have had experience with wiring. what happened was the lightening hit that tree traveled under the ground and came into your house thru some outside wiring you have like yard lights.

Hi to all my fellow gardeners, June is speeding by so fast! The girly pumpkins are practicing their snapping on the snapdragons, when it's not raining!

Do any of you know how to get Thia basil to grow? I bought some plants at the spring plant sale PG had the first weekend of May. They aren't much larger today than they were the day I planted them. About 3" tall. The sweet basil I bought at the same time are growing well and look great. They are all planted in the same raised bed and have recieved the same care. What can I do to make the Thia grow? I love the smell of it but have to get really low to even get a slight whiff. I'v raised it before with no growth problems. I have bunny poo in the bed.

I found 2 more volunteer tomato plants a while ago and got them into the row. For someone who thought she would only have about 5 or 6 plants it has expanded to 13 so far. lol. I think I counted 16 asparagus bean plants coming up and only 2 of the bush beans I planted in containers. I replaced the seeds in 3 of the containers the other day. And the replacement squash are coming up fine now.

Lots of the cabinet doors got painted today. But the paint is still too wet to put the hardware back on. And the bottom edge the doors were setting on still have to be painted. I ran out of the paint I mixed up so I'll have to mix more for the rest of the doors. I decided the paint I had mixed up at the store was too light so I mixed in some of what we have left from painting the house. I think some of the hinges are rusty enough to need replacing. I pray that hinge is still available.

The weather is still so nice. No rain in sight that I know of and not to hot. I still have the windows open in some of rooms.

GOD bless and keep each of you.

Good Morning!...

Sending positive thoughts to the flooded areas......we had a flooded basement from high groundwater, but that's it.....can't imagine the problems they're having.

My purple (black opal) basil isn't thriving either leaflady....I don't know why but hope someone has a clue or advice.

The rains were really hard on the vegie garden weren't they?...Everything that was seeded was washed down to wherever the puddles took them...found the peas flourishing in the creeping phlox, the lettuce is in the carrot bed, shallots stayed in place and made a fence to keep the carrots from washing away....thinned them out and the combination of top leaves is kind of pretty.

Hid the one surviving squash plant between some meadow rue and ditch lilies...so far no beetles have found them and they're growing fine.

Jasper Co., MO(Zone 6b)

About Basil I use potting soil and seed starting soil mix it up good then when sun coming up from east which basil need sun light but not full just partial shade (direct sun) and see basil like to stay in pot or ground ( I don't put in ground which it soil is not good) I got mine is still growing in pot....

Thumbnail by JuJu55

Good morning too! Thanks for sharing the hints about growing basil, my seeds didn't even germinate..so I'll try again.

Norwood, MO(Zone 6a)

I have been absent for far too long and have missed all of you very much.

So much has been going on that it would take a small book to cover it all... suffice it to say that I once again have flooring, painted walls, a refrigerator and a microwave that is not on a rickety stand outside my bedroom door... I no longer have to eat outside and air conditioning is working again... YAY and PTL!!! (Praise The Lord) .... My house is still a wreck and no complaints are coming from me, that is only a matter of time now... the major stuff is over with.

My DD moved into her new home and I spent a couple of days helping them unpack and decorate. Those kids are growing up so fast and surprise me often with their wit and sometimes wisdom...

We are safe from any flood waters here as we are on a hill, the creeks/rivers get up high ... we have flash flooding... but that is temporary and we stay put until the water flows on down... I pray for any and all that are in harms way or near it... I saw a link to a thread for flood check ins' above,so I will go there tomorrow.

I have not had time yet to read and catch up on this thread, but will try to do so tomorrow so I know how everyone is ...

I am so blessed and grateful for those blessings... I hope all of you are well ...
