Can I grow any bearded iris besides TB's in Southern CA

Santa Ana, CA

I that MDB's need cold weather in order to bloom but I can't find out any info on the requirements for the other types of bearded iris. My TB's bloom beautifully but I would like to add smaller ones because of the limited amount of space that I have and multitude of pretty iris that I'd like to have. I live in central OC within the triangle created by the 5, 55 and 22 fwys. I think that it is considered zone 9 but am unsure about the sub zone that I see some people list. Thanks, Laurel

why don't you check with your local AIS group? try www.irises.org, click on Regions and look for your State and locate some nearest you. They'll know what grows in your area, both bearded and beardless - and you have PAC irises, of which I'm forever envious.

Certainly look into the PCI's (Pacific Coast Irises). They're GORGEOUS!

As far as beardeds are concerned, you should be able to grow border beardeds and perhaps intermediate beardeds. I'm not sure about the miniature and standard dwarfs, though. bonjon offered a very good suggestion about contacting your local iris society to see what they recommend.
